Obituary

Marcela Theresa Word, age 83, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2026.

Marcela was born on March 1, 1943, in Marksville, Louisiana, to Doris Poret and Calvin Poret, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Samuel Word, and her nephew, Ryan Lawfer.

After completing two years of secretarial school, Marcela moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she began her career as an administrator with Mapco Oil. Following her retirement, she continued to put her keen eye for detail to use as a handwriting analyst for court proceedings. She approached every chapter of her professional life with dedication, intelligence, and integrity.

Marcela found joy in life's simple pleasures. She loved gardening, caring for animals, and sewing. She had a warm and welcoming spirit that naturally drew people to her. Social, kindhearted, witty, and strong in character, Marcela formed lasting friendships wherever she went. Her quick sense of humor, compassionate heart, and unwavering strength will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

She is lovingly survived by her sisters, Kathy Barth (Gary) of Pineville, Louisiana, and Charlene Lawfer of Tulsa, Oklahoma; her brother, Michael Poret (Denise) of Pollock, Louisiana; her nephew, Todd Barth (Aliis) of Tallinn, Estonia; her niece, Kristen Hilborn (Wesley) of Pineville, Louisiana; her nephew, Matthew Lawfer (Christina) of Tulsa, Oklahoma; one great-nephew; and two great-nieces. She also leaves behind many cherished friends whose lives were enriched by her kindness, generosity, and enduring friendship.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of Livewell Hospice, especially Sarah Kennedy, her case manager, Wesley Dosser, RN, and Chaplain Dave Peterson for the exceptional care, comfort, and dignity they provided during Marcela's final days. Their kindness and support will never be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association in Marcela's honor.

Though she will be deeply missed, Marcela's legacy of love, resilience, friendship, and compassion will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
