Maria Luiza Alexandra Razook Dakil, died today in her daughter's and son-in-law's home in Vienna, Virginia at the age of 93. Maria was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Dakil, her father Iskander Razook, her mother Fahda Swayden Razook, her brothers Ralph and George Razook and sister Mona Razook Mady.
Maria was born on July 5, 1923 in Mexico City, Mexico. Her father had emigrated to the United States from a Christian village in the South of Lebanon due to persecution of the Christians by the Ottoman Empire in Lebanon at that time. Maria's mother, unable to come to the United States, emigrated to Mexico City, and was later joined by her husband, Iskander. After Maria turned 2, the family of six children emigrated to Sao Paolo, Brasil where there is now a prominent Razook family. Maria was also known as Alexandra which was a term of endearment derived from her father's name.
Maria met her husband, Ted, in the United States when she visited family with her sister in 1953. They married in Brasil in 1954, and Maria proudly became a naturalized American soon thereafter.
Maria and Ted ran successful dry goods businesses in Lamesa and later Hereford, Texas. At one point, Maria opened Alexandra's Fashion Shop that featured trendy clothes of the day. In 1972, Ted and Maria moved to Tulsa where she had a successful career in retail sales. Her last position was with Sears, and she retired in 1989 after 11 years of service. Maria was also known to be an incredible cook of Lebanese cuisine.
Maria was a member of St. Anne's parish in Broken Arrow from 1972 to the mid-1990's but then began attending St. Therese of the Child Jesus Maronite Catholic Church. She remained a member of St. Therese until her congestive heart illness required that she move to live with her daughter and son-in-law in Vienna.
Maria is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Paulina and Christopher Moore, son and daughter-in-law, George and Mary Dakil, son Morice Dakil, and the apple of her eye, her grandson Joshua Dakil and his mother Shelly Dakil, as well as her sister Alicia Razook Naifeh, brother Alberto Razook in Sao Paulo, and Tulsa nieces Kathy Heinz, Margaret Taylor and Susanne Pickering.
All her family in the United States and Brasil are heartbroken because a unique and beautiful mother and woman has passed from our midst, but she will be forever remembered and adored in the hearts and minds of all of us who dearly loved her.
