Marilee Story left this life peacefully and in the presence of her two loving daughters on May 12, 2016. Born in Tulsa on August 30, 1929, Marilee was the third child of A.M. "Butch" Butcher Sr. and Hazel Richardson Butcher. She attended Barnard Elementary and Horace Mann Jr. High, and graduated in Tulsa's Central High School Class of 1947. She attended the University of Colorado and pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. After returning to Tulsa, Marilee met the love of her life, John "Jack" Story, Jr., on a blind date arranged by a close friend. They were married in July 1951 and together, Jack and Marilee raised their family of four children.
Marilee was known to say she had been "born a Presbyterian" and after growing up at First Presbyterian Church, Marilee and Jack became lifelong members at Southminster Presbyterian in Brookside. There, they grew in their faith and enjoyed many meaningful friendships. While at Southminster, Marilee served as an elder, circle leader, church school teacher, and member of the handbell choir (which she loved). She served as president of United Presbyterian Women, supported Dwight Mission, and many of the congregations of the Choctaw Agency in the Eastern Oklahoma Presbytery. Marilee also served as President of Synodical and in other leadership roles with the Synod of the Sun. She enjoyed her membership in the P.E.O. sisterhood, as well as her involvement with the Central High School alumni group. To those surviving, Marilee was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, step sister, aunt, great aunt, and dear friend.
Marilee was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Jack; mother Hazel; father Antis; stepmother Jennie Shaffer Butcher; sister Irene Horton; brother, Antis "Butch" Jr.; stepbrothers Ray and Don Shaffer; and stepsister Pat Stites. Marilee is survived by her sons John Story (Julie) of Tulsa, Mark Story (Anne) of Damascus, OR, and her daughters Hazel Maureen Story (William) of San Diego, CA, and Marianne Haddad (Gary) of Tulsa; as well as eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
The family is grateful to staff and friends at Burgundy Place, Oklahoma Methodist Manor, Physician's Choice Hospice, and Southminster Church, who provided loving care and companionship to Marilee since Jack passed away, along with many others. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31st, 2016 at Southminster Presbyterian Church in Tulsa. The Reverend Nancy Covington will officiate. After the celebration, a reception will follow. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Southminster Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.
