Marja Alieda
Willis
September 23, 1944 – May 6, 2026
Marja Alieda Willis was born in Wassenaar, Holland, in 1944 and passed away peacefully on May 6, 2026.
At the age of seven, she immigrated to the United States with her parents, Alida and Maljeart Zandbergen, as they began a new chapter of life in America. Her parents opened a floral nursery, and Marja often shared their story of resilience and determination, how they arrived knowing very little English yet built a life through hard work, perseverance, and hope. Their journey remained a meaningful part of her identity throughout her life.
Marja was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, educator, and friend whose life was marked by compassion, curiosity, strength, and generosity. She married James Willis on December 12, 1986, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where together they built a life centered on family and a shared love of animals.
She attended Edison High School and later studied at the University of Tulsa, earning a degree in English Literature with a minor in German. Her career reflected both creativity and dedication. She first worked as a hairdresser before opening and operating her own high-end salon in Tulsa. Later, she pursued her passion for education, teaching English at Mounds High School and German at Wilson High School, where she eventually became Head of the Language Department. She was deeply committed to her students and especially passionate about sponsoring and supporting international students, helping many feel welcomed and encouraged far from home.
Marja had a lifelong love of running and was an accomplished half-marathon runner, completing numerous races and earning awards within her age group. Beyond running, she found joy in rescuing animals, traveling, gardening, skiing, and spending time with her family. Her adventurous spirit, love of nature, and active lifestyle remained evident throughout her life.
She is survived by her children, Annette (Kerry) Elliott Graham, Ryan Willis, Joseph Willis, James (Ginny) Willis; and by her cherished grandchildren, Christina Nguyen, Alexandria Shewchuk, Lauren Willis, Kate Willis, Jaden Pera, and Olivia Willis.
She is also survived by her sisters, Johanna Atherton and Yvonne Smith.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Willis; her children, Jennifer Elliott McConnell and Jack Elliott; her stepdaughter, Jennifer Dowling; her parents, Alida and Maljeart Zandbergen; and her brother, Case Zandbergen.
Marja will be remembered for her strength, intelligence, adventurous spirit, and unwavering support for those she loved. Her legacy lives on through her family, the animals she cared for, the students she inspired, and the many lives she touched with kindness and grace.
