Obituary

Mary Louise Cruzan Blake was born October 2, 1930 in Oklahoma City to William and Mary Ann Cruzan, one of eight children. She became an angel of the Lord on October 5, 2016. Mary Lou graduated from Capitol Hill High School. After high school while working as a roller skating instructor, she met a young man who, although a very good skater, pretended to be a beginner so he could meet pretty young Mary. This young man was Bruce Boone Blake. They fell in love and were married for the last 63 years. They were blessed with two children and two grandchildren.
Mary Lou worked for many years as a payroll clerk for Safeway stores. She also was active in supporting the kid's activities including Brownie leader, cheer sponsor, baseball and tennis mom. Mary Lou and Bruce shared life together. Mary Lou was a loyal and supportive companion. You really cannot say one name without the other. Bruce and Mary Lou were not just married, they were best friends. They had OU football season tickets for 26 years and enjoyed games in Norman and often travelled to one game away each year. They stuck together through good and tough times, because that is what is supposed to be done.
Son David served in the Navy, for which his parents were both proud. Daughter Kathy met husband Brian while working at the same engineering firm. After dating a while, Mary Lou would call Brian at work and invite him to dinner. She would add that Brian could bring Kathy. So then Brian would go see Kathy and tell her they were going to her parents for dinner. She asked if they should call her mom, and Brian would say that was not necessary as she had called to invite Brian and to bring Kathy along.
No one who ever entered Mary Lou's house was a stranger. She was kind and caring. She also had a very optimistic view of the world. She knew things would always work out. She looked forward without dwelling on the past.
Later in life, Mary Lou volunteered for many church activities. Bruce and Mary Lou were long-time active members of Christ United Methodist Church. She and Bruce and their core group of church friends loved to go to dinner and then play cards after.
She was also very proud of grandchildren Marianne and Kevin.
Unfortunately Alzheimer's disease stole Mary Lou from us at too young an age. Bruce remained a loyal companion until the end by visiting her twice each day as long as he was driving.
Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Wallace, Bobby, Daniel, and Bruce as well as sisters Margo Rost and Betty Cruzan. She is survived by her loving husband Bruce, brother Jimmy Cruzan, son David, daughter Kathy and son-in-law Brian Guenther, and grandchildren Marianne and Kevin Guenther.
Today is a day to rejoice for Mary Lou's life. Each of us who knew her is better for it. The tears we shed are for our loss. Mary Lou is in heaven with Jesus. She has attained what we all hope to when our time comes. We can all learn from her to always look forward and embrace life and enjoy the small things.
She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and follower of the Lord. We loved her and miss her, but we will see her again.
