Obituary

My life as I remember it by Margaret Harpster Brewer...

I was born on May 1, 1924 in Florence, Kansas, I was the 5th child of Willis and Nancy Harpster. All the children before me were all boys...Wayne, George, Dale and Brian. I always wanted a sister but that did not happen and wen Bob was born I was very unhappy. But I soon changed my mind as he is a great brother.

When the Depression came along my parents lost our home on 6th Street and we moved to 5th Street. After graduating from High School Wayne got a job at the Post Office, which was one of the best jobs in Florence. Wayne saved his money and planned to attend University of Texas. When my parents lost our home, he used the money he had saved to purchase our home on 5th Street. This home had been in my Mother's family for many years and I'm sure it made the move easier, and everyone was happy to live there. My Brother Wayne worked nights at a Caf6 to make enough to finish college.

My family moved to Oklahoma City because my Dad went to work for Tinker Air Force Base, and he was extraordinarily successful as a mechanic and invented a spray to de-ice the planes during cold weather. He never got a Patent on this and so he never received a penny because it was invented during working at the Air Base. The solution was used for many years to come.

I graduated from Florence High School and after moving to Oklahoma City I attended Central State College. I worked in the Railroad office and then went to work for Halliburton's. While ttending Central State College my brother Bob introduced me to a football player named Val Brewer and we began dating and were married on November 12, 1949.

Shortly after Val and I moved to Corpus Christie, Texas where our first child was bom, Michael Val Brewer. A year later we were transferred to Manhattan, Kansas where our second child was born, Lou Ann Brewer. After a couple of years Val took a job with Oscar Mayer and we relocated in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma for 2 years and then made our move to Tulsa, Oklahoma where we lived until 1971. Then on to 2 years in Omaha, Nebraska and then back to Tulsa, Oklahoma where Val and I opened our own meat distribution company, Val's Distributing. I worked every day along side Val and some days it was difficult to be married to your Boss. All and all it was a great decision and Val and I both retired from Val's Distributing.

Then started the most fun and exciting time of our life as we purchased a Travel Trailer and began years of traveling all over the United States and were able to see 49 states. Sometimes we traveled just the two of us and sometimes we had a caravan, it was a wonderful life. Lou Ann called us her gypsy parents because she never knew when we left when we would be back. We just planned our destination and then we just took our time and saw everything we wanted to along the way. At that time there was no cell phones so not a lot of contact with people back home but awesome memories.

After our years of travel, we lived a very fulfilling life at home where I became interested in Watercolor painting and Val took up Woodworking. We both enjoyed our life, and he had his Walking Buddies at the Mall and I had my Tea Party group of women from church and we both loved what we were doing. After Val's death I continued to live in my home and painting pictures for so many of my family and friends. OKC Thunder was one of my favorite things to watch on TV and I continued reading newspaper from front to back every day. I enjoyed being aware of what was going on in the world.
