Mary Louise "Mary Lou" (Houser) Gibson was born on Dec. 19th, 1933, on her family's farm in Oneida, OK to Otha and Sylvia Mae Houser. The second youngest of seven siblings, Mary Lou enjoyed helping her father on the farm as a child.
After attending business school, Mary Lou worked at Atlas Life Insurance (located in the historic Atlas building in downtown Tulsa). She began as a check-writer and moved all the way up to the role of corporate secretary during her 39 years there.
She met her husband, Jimmy "J." Alan Gibson, at a youth function at First Christian Church, where they were married on Dec. 10th, 1960. They were the first couple to be wed in the church's new chapel.
Mary Lou loved to travel with her husband, and they especially enjoyed visiting the Holy Land. They also served on the Camp Christian committee for over two decades, and donated and helped raise money for the building of a new lodge at Camp Christian, which was named in their honor. Mary Lou also worked with Rev. Richard Ziglar to adopt centenarians into the Oklahoma Centenarian Club.
Mary Lou enjoyed crocheting and making and painting ceramics, but her biggest passion by far was gardening. She was well-known in her neighborhood for the rows of pink impatiens she planted in her front flowerbeds each spring.
Mary Lou passed away on Nov. 23rd, 2023 in Tulsa. She is survived by her husband J. and their many nieces and nephews.
The visitation will be on Friday, Dec. 8th from 4 - 7 pm at Moore Funeral Home's Southlawn Chapel (9350 E 51st St, Tulsa, OK 74145). Her celebration of life will take place on Saturday, Dec. 9th at 11 am at First Christian Church (913 South Boulder Ave, Tulsa, OK 74119).
