A celebration of life for Mary Walker of Oologah, Okla., will be Saturday, August 18, 2018, at 10 AM at Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa Okla.
Mary passed away peacefully, August 13, 2018, following a lengthy illness. She was born to Willis and Mary Jane Rounds in Tulsa on September 26, 1939. The family was complete with the addition of her sister George Ann, eight years later.
In 1958, Mary graduated Tulsa Edison High School, where she played clarinet in the band. She immediately enrolled in the Nursing School at Hillcrest Hospital, and graduated as a registered nurse three years later.
She married Ralph Walker on August 26, 1961. Their daughter, Cheryl, was born in October 1962.
Mary's nursing career started at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kan. She and Ralph returned to Tulsa, where she worked at Hillcrest Hospital for a brief time before becoming a nurse for the Tulsa Public School District. During her many years at Tulsa Schools, Mary continued her education becoming one of the first pediatric nurse practitioners in Tulsa. After retiring from Tulsa Schools, she spent a short time with a private practice pediatrician before deciding to move into psychiatric nursing at Grand Lake Mental Health. She ended her professional career at Rogers County SafeNet as a victim's advocate. She continued volunteer service with SafeNet until she stopped working in 2005.
Her happiest times were spent with her family and enjoying a variety of craft projects. Mary and Ralph could be found many weekends at antique stores or flea markets searching for additions to her antique glass collection. Along with her sister, Mary attended many shows at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. She enjoyed spending her free time reading, knitting, quilting, crocheting or doing needle point.
