Mary E. Sloan, the daughter of D. F. and Mallie E. (Davis) Mahannah was born June 1, 1896, at Sedgwick, Harvey County, KS. The family moved to Gage, OK where her parents homesteaded. Mary grew to womanhood and attended the local schools in Gage.
On July 13, 1916, she was united in marriage to James Roscoe Sloan in Woodward, OK. Theirs was a congenial union that had been privileged to have shared the joys and disappointments of life together for over 55 years.
The Sloan family came to McPherson, KS, in 1933. They lived there until J. R.'s death on April 4, 1972. Mary was a faithful wife who cared for her husband during seven years of failing health. Mary's passing came Friday, March 4, 1977, at Tulsa, Oklahoma at St. John Medical Center of bone marrow cancer. For the past four years, she had been living with her son and daughter-in-law, who gave her loving care. She was 80 years of age.
Mary was a member of the First United Methodist Church of McPherson, KS, and was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She loved, and was devoted to, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she was happiest, when they were in her presence.
Mary is survived by her son, Keith Sloan and wife, Dorothy of Tulsa, OK; 3 grandchildren, Kent Sloan of Tulsa, OK, Mrs. Marsha McMannus of Denver, CO, and Gail Sloan of San Francisco, CA; 4 great-granchildren, Scott and Shannon McMannus, Michelle and Angels Sloan; 2 brothers, Fred Mahannah of Clayton, NM, and Earl Mahannah of Raton, NM; 3 sisters, Mrs. Edith Oldham of Truth or Consequences, NM, Mrs. Milton Moore of Des Moines, NM, and Mrs. Ed Oldham of Grinville, NM; and a lifetime of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband. Mary will be greatly missed in the days ahead, but her spirit and memories will live on within each of us because we were privileged to have her in our lives.
