Obituary

Mary Margaret Proctor heard her Savior say "Well done, good and faithful servant" on November 27, 2019 after 99 years of loving service to her family, friends, church, and country. Mary was born July 30, 1920 in Tulsa. At the time of her birth, her family lived on a dirt road near 21st and Utica having recently moved here, her father to be an architect for St. John Hospital and her mother to be, most likely, the first woman physician in Tulsa. She attended school at Lincoln Elementary, Wilson Junior High, Central High School and Oklahoma College for Women. She transferred to Oklahoma A&M (OSU) where she joined Chi Omega sorority, graduating in 1942 with a BS in Business. After working as a lease clerk for Carter Oil, she joined the US Navy WAVES in 1943. She completed officer training at Smith College in Northampton, MA, and continued her service as an instructor of communications there. She often spoke of fond memories of her time in Northampton where she shared a large house with five other women officers who remained her close friends for decades. After two years, she was transferred to San Francisco for one year, resigning from the Navy at the close of WWII. She worked for First National Bank until marrying Norbert Proctor, Jr. in 1947. Mary and Norbert were married for 52 years before Norbert's passing. During that time, Mary was a loving and devoted wife and mother, raising three children, Marilyn Bartlett (deceased), Carol Peter, and Bruce Proctor. She was very involved in her children's schools, including serving for several years as the first PTA president of the newly built Byrd Junior High (now Memorial Junior High). She faithfully attended countless football games, tennis matches, parades and recitals, always taking an active role in her children's activities. She was an excellent seamstress and cook, and an active member of Southminster Presbyterian Church, and later, Asbury United Methodist Church. Mary was among the first residents of Montereau Retirement Community, enjoying many friendships there for over 15 years. Throughout her life, she remained devoted and lovingly active in the lives of her family members including her sons-in-law, Mike Bartlett and Mike Peter, her daughter-in-law, Jennifer Proctor, and her 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Mary touched many lives with her selfless service and love for her family. She will be deeply missed and always remembered.
Memorial donations may be made to The Little Light House or Asbury United Methodist Church.
