Obituary

Max Lee Nightingale passed from this life on October 17, 2019 in Tulsa, OK at the age of 93. He was the oldest of two sons born to Harold R. and Dorothy Booth Nightingale in Corning, Kansas on November 22, 1925. He grew up in Corning, Parsons, and Emporia, Kansas.

He played baseball, basketball and football in high school, and eventually semi-pro baseball. His real joy was coaching his son's baseball teams when they were in elementary and junior high school. He also coached American Legion Baseball and a granddaughters softball team. When not involved with coaching, he enjoyed hunting quail, pheasants, and ducks with his sons and his good friend, Dick Garwood. He and Dick also caught many fish together.

He joined the Army in July of 1944 at the age of 18, and was quickly sent to fight in World War II in Europe. He was in General Patton's 3rd Army, in the 87th Infantry Division, 345th Regiment, F Company, where he served as a scout, one of the most dangerous positions in combat. He was in one of three companies that received the Presidential Distinguished Unit Citation for their assault on the Siegfried Line. He was also awarded two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star. After being shot through the shoulder by a German sniper, he walked several miles back to an aid station before being shipped to a hospital in England. He completed his service at a base in San Antonio, Texas.

After the war, he went to work for Pan American Petroleum in Ulysses, KS, where he met Aileen McKee who also worked for Pan American. They married in November of 1950. He was later transferred to Oklahoma City and then Tulsa by his company, which eventually was renamed Amoco Production Company, where he retired after 38 years.

Max is survived by his three children, Linn R. Nightingale and wife, Susan of Mounds, Oklahoma. and Chris A. Nightingale and wife, Shari of Katy, Texas, Judy B. Gunn and husband, Neal, of Peyton, Colorado, Keith Harrison, Lesley Draper, Holly Aranda, all of Emporia, Kansas. Grandchildren include Mandy Burn, Kyle Nightingale, David Gunn, Joseph Gunn, Jimmy Gunn, Riann Creech, Dax Nightingale, Dae Lowe, Dara Gilliam, Darci Nightingale, Danielle Haunschild, Erica Brettell, Noah Sanco, Sarah Sherman, Emily Stewart, Hannah Draper, Hillary Draper, Chris Santos, Marina Nevarez, Dulce Nevarez, Naomi Aranda, Austen Aranda, Noel Aranda and 51 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold R and Dorothy Booth Nightingale, his brother, Guy Nightingale, a son, David Nightingale, a grandson, Peter Gunn, his first wife, Aileen McKee Nightingale, his second wife, Glenna Harrison Nightingale and a granddaughter, Lindsay Ferrill.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m.,Tuesday, October 22, 2019 and the Memorial Service time will be 1:00 P.M., Saturday, October 26, 2019 both at Moore's Southlawn Funeral Home, 9350 E. 51st Street, Tulsa, OK. Interment will be in Ulysses, Kansas.
