Obituary

Hyder, Melvin "Mel", passed away November 19, 2018 in Tulsa, OK. Memorial service will be 3:00 P.M., Monday, November 26, 2018 at First Baptist Church-Jenks, 11701 S. Elm St., Jenks, OK 74037 Moore's Southlawn Chapel 918-663-2233

Melvin Lee Hyder went on to Glory on Tuesday, November 20th, 2018 surrounded by his loving wife and his two sons. Amma, as all the grandkids called him, was born August 26th, 1939 in a small town called Wilson, Texas, just a few miles from Haile Center, Texas to the late Clyde Lee Hyder and Lorene Shelton Hyder. He graduated from Haile Center High School, and joined the United States Navy in 1957. He served as an Aviation Electrician and was honorably discharged as a 3rd Class Petty officer in 1960. Mel worked as a hair dresser in Lubbock and Waco, Texas where he met his lifelong love. They married in 1969 and were together ever since. Mel joined the US Postal Service in 1986 and retired after 35 years with many service awards.

He passionately enjoyed playing Bluegrass music his entire life ranging from playing an acoustic guitar at events with his wife as back up on the hammered dulcimer to weekly 'pickin sessions' where he would play his favorite mandolin with close friends. Mel was an 'Iron Butt' award winning Motorcycle enthusiast whose multiple Harley-Davidson motorcycles traveled well over 100,000 curvy miles during his lifetime. He loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a devout Christian who enjoyed attending the 'Prime Timers' functions at Jenks First Baptist, and had many close friends within the Church and community.

Mel is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Linda Hyder, two sisters, Rita Glasscock of Odessa, Texas and Norvene Owen of Plainview, Texas, his brother, Garth Hyder of Sweetwater, Texas, his two sons, Douglas Hyder of Bixby, Oklahoma and Mitch Hyder and his wife, Madelyn, of Newberry, Florida; and 7 grandchildren: Cassidy Hyder, Jackie Hyder, Joey Hyder, Jacob Hyder, Jonny Hyder, Andy Hyder, and Makayla Hyder.
