Obituary

In the early morning hours September 20, 2022, Meredith Evelyn (Rountree) Rutledge, journeyed from her earthly home in Tulsa, Oklahoma to her heavenly home at the fully-lived age of 88.

Meredith's life on earth began on June 4, 1934, as the only child of John Rountree and Margaret Yeager Rountree in Wildhorse (now Skiatook), Oklahoma. The family eventually moved to Hominy, Oklahoma where they founded, owned and operated the Rountree Dairy.

A tall young lady who played a bit of basketball, Meredith excelled academically and graduated from Hominy High School at the tender age of 16. Despite having received numerous full-ride scholarship opportunities to attend college, Meredith stayed home where she helped with the family business until she met and married William Alva Rutledge before she had turned 20. The couple traveled across the country in the early years of their marriage and were blessed with three children, Stephen, Loretta and Linda, born in three different states.

Later as a single mother, Meredith completed her career as a Medical Transcriptionist at Tulsa Regional Medical Center where she remained a faithful employee until she retired. As a single mom, who was focused on raising children in a world of challenges, her willingness to self-sacrifice and the energy that powered her work ethic made her an unstoppable force. To supplement her income, she also worked part time as a seamstress, making clothes for other people to make sure she could provide for her children. At one point in her job history, she was employed in an historical role of sorts with the American Lung Association as a driver of the local "BreathMobile" while administering lung capacity tests and educating the public about the health risks of smoking.

Later in her life, Meredith found love again and married good friend and dance partner, Jim Jenner. Together, the couple wore out many of the dance floors around Tulsa. In retirement, she refused to slow down, splitting her time between countless activities which brought her into community with so many others. She taught an exercise class for seniors, took painting classes, was part of an ensemble that sang at nursing homes, enjoyed jewelry-making and craft shows and participated in local Senior Centers. Meanwhile, she continued perfecting her lifelong skill of quilting, making sure to create a unique quilt for every new member of the family.

Her passion in life was her family and spending focused time loving on her great-grands. Meredith was a devoted disciple and faithful follower of Jesus Christ, having been a part of the Church of the Nazarene for most of her life, and more recently as a member of the United Methodist Church. She so loved singing and praising the Lord that she sang in the choir of every church she had attended. She found comfort and solace in her daily Bible time sharing her faith and praying with any one she encountered. A scripture she would want to share with all of us is found in Colossians 2:2 - "That their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God's mystery, which is Christ." One of her favorite hymns was "Great is Thy Faithfulness."

Meredith is preceded in death by her parents, her husband - Jim Jenner, and her beloved aunts and uncles. Her legacy lives on in the lives of her three children, Stephen Duane Rutledge, Loretta Rutledge Canino (husband, Robert) and Linda Denise Embry. In addition, she leaves, 6 grandchildren; Mitchell Embry (wife, Holly), Lainey Embry, Brianne Morrow (husband Riley), Braden Canino (wife, Isabella), Elyse Embry-Smith (husband, Justin) and Sam Embry (wife, Laura), as well as 6 great-grandchildren, Sage, Rose, Indaya, Sadie, Oscar and Arlo, who all affectionally know her as Nana.
