Merlyn Loren Proffitt, 85, of Owasso, passed away Monday, March 14, 2016. He was born October 7, 1930 to Nathaniel Foster and Rose Mae Proffitt. Merlyn was the son of a Methodist minister and was a graduate of Central High School in Oklahoma City, where he met and eventually married his high school sweetheart, Bobbie Jo Ball. He worked as Vice President of Data Processing and Assistant Treasurer for Mid-Continent Group for 42 years, retiring in 1993. He was heavily involved in youth sports, serving on the Board of Directors and as the Wrestling Commissioner of the Southeast Tulsa Bears Athletic Organization, as well as the director of Junior Olympics/Tulsa Nationals Wrestling Tournament, which is still a major wrestling event today. He was a member of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, and was a volunteer for the American Red Cross. Merlyn was truly a servant of the Lord who always put others before himself in literally every situation. Merlyn is survived by his wife, Linda Proffitt; his children, Merlyn (Mel) Proffitt, Jr. and his wife Laura of Edmond, OK; Nathan Proffitt and his wife Jackie of Tulsa, OK; and Jana Davis of Jenks, OK; 7 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren, step-children Tony Warner and his wife Lori of Watonga, OK, and Kirt Warner of Skiatook, OK, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Merlyn was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Bobbie Jo Proffitt, and his brothers Paul Carroll Proffitt and William Foster Proffitt. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charitable organization of your choice.
