Obituary

Merrill J. Winters, 80, of Tulsa, OK, passed away, Wednesday, November 2, 1977. He was born on Thursday, January 7, 1897, in Baxter Springs, KS, to Lewis Lou Winters and Mattie (Renick) Winters. Merrill was proud to have served as one of our Nation's finest, as a Private in the United States Army in WWI. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Baxter Springs, KS, and American Legion Post #206 in Baxter Springs, KS. He retired from McCartney Manufacturing in Baxter Springs, KS, where he was a machinist and auto mechanic. Merrill is survived by his second wife, Ora Grace (Morrison) Winters of the home; stepson, Russell D. Brown, Jr. of Tulsa, OK; 1 granddaughter; 1 brother, Frederick Cashus Winters of Pico Riveria, CA; 3 sisters, Mrs. Mabel C. Smith and husband, Arthur D. Smith of Oklahoma City, OK, Grace P. Winters of Baxter Springs, KS, and Mrs. Mildred Stella Scott Larson and husband, Carl Leonard Larson; 2 sisters-in-law, Mrs. Gilbert "Lillie Opal" Winters, and Mrs. Frederick "Edna Maude" Winters; 2 nephews, Gilbert B. Winters, Jr., and Roy E. Larson; and a lifetime of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Lela Leta (Congdon) Winters; 2 brothers, Harvey Raymond Winters, and Gilbert Buster "Buck" Winters; and brother-in-law, Gilbert Edward Scott.
