Obituary

Mike Moguin, 79, a lifelong Tulsan, entered the arms of his Lord Jesus Christ, Sunday morning, August 29th, while surrounded by his devoted family. Michael George Moguin was born July 20, 1942, to George W. Moguin and Tommie Jean Stewart. After his early school years attending Marquette, he attended and graduated from Will Rogers High School in 1960 along with the largest senior class ever in Tulsa. After a 3-year stint in Germany with the Army, he returned to Tulsa and married Sharon Young Moguin on Christmas Day, 1964. From this union were two children, Michael Warren and Katherine Gail.

While at Rogers, Mike distinguished himself in the school wrestling program, a sport that became a focus throughout his life as he coached generations of wrestlers at various schools; i.e., Skelly Junior High, Bishop Kelley High School, Cascia Hall Preparatory School as well as other wrestling programs in the area and was known as a local Icon in the sport.

Although his profession as a Tulsa Firefighter in the 70s and 80s was a major accomplishment, his first love was always athletics. From this grew his expertise in body building - starting with a fully equipped weight lifting gym in his home garage - to the 1976 opening of Moguin's Gym originally located at 11th and Harvard, serving some of the top athletes and bodybuilders in the city for the next two decades. Mike himself won the bodybuilding title of Mr. Oklahoma, in 1972.

Mike will always be remembered for his quick wit, ready laugh and boyish grin. Any lack of height or hair was made up by charm and charisma. He was a lover of dogs, old black and white movies, big band, jazz and blues. He had a green thumb and turned his back yard into a floral oasis with rock pathways, ferns and flowering plants. He knew the City of Tulsa well and loved its history. He would drive family members throughout the City citing stories of what "used to be there" and all the interesting events that occurred throughout the years. He never went anywhere without running into someone he knew. He was greatly loved and respected. Tulsa was always his home.

Mike was a beloved husband, father and Papa and his family is heart broken by his absence and will never forget how blessed they were to have him. Mike is survived by his wife, Sharon Moguin of the home; son Mike Moguin Jr. of Tulsa; daughter Katie Moguin Davis of Tulsa; granddaughter Madison Sides and husband Scott of Tulsa; grandson Mason Moguin and wife Josie, USAF in Italy; granddaughter Megan Beeson and husband Jaron, of Monett, MO; great-grandson Jordan Sides, of Tulsa; sister Diane Shirley and husband Robert of Huntington Beach, California; and brother Joe Moguin and wife Ann of Los Angeles, California. Also survived by LaVonne Moguin of Tulsa and a myriad of nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, John Moguin, and son-in-law, Brady Davis.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 10th, at 2:00 p.m. at Harvard Avenue Baptist Church, 3235 E. 17th Street (17th and Harvard). In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to the Mike Moguin Wrestling Scholarship Fund at Will Rogers All-Sports Boosters,
P. O. Box 14504, Tulsa, OK 74159.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for all of the heartfelt sympathy and tributes to Mike they have received. You are all a blessing to us.
