Obituary

In loving memory of Myrtle Gibson Harris, February 7, 1925 -July 5, 2016. Myrtle was one of 10 children born to Dora Belle Gibson and William Gibson. Her childhood home was in Evarts, Kentucky. She had fond memories of helping her mother with the hillside gardens, gathering eggs from the hen house, and playing with her brothers and sisters. She liked to walk down to the Evarts post office with her father or to the only market in the town for a penny candy treat and, a few times, he even let her go down to his coal mine. The family attended the Evarts Baptist Church and after everyone was gone from Evarts, Myrtle, her brothers and sisters and their families returned for a family reunion for many years and always included attending a service at that church before departing from the weekend reunion.

Myrtle met her future husband, Marcellus Harris, in Knoxville, Tennessee while she was in nursing training and he was at the University of Tennessee. They were married for 68 years. They had 2 daughters, Olivia and Marcella.

During their marriage they lived in 5 states with the majority of the years in Florida. Myrtle was a teacher for several years, but during her later years, she enjoyed writing short stories and poems with many being published in a variety of magazines. Marc and Myrtle loved to travel. They visited the Holy Land, Bahamas, Nassau, Scandinavia, Great Britain, South America, USSR, Costa Rica, Panama, Mexico, China, Japan, Yugoslavia, Central and Eastern Europe, Romania, Iceland, Thailand, Bali, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tahiti, Philippines, the Arctic Circle and all the states in the U.S. They also enjoyed a Caribbean cruise to see Halley's Comet and traveled by train through Canada. They made 2 trips to Alaska and included a granddaughter on each of them.

Marcellus Harris, husband, and Marcella Sweet, daughter, are deceased. Myrtle will be greatly missed by family members; daughter Olivia Ruth and husband Bill; granddaughters Rebecca Reed, Marcella Raglin, Rachel Lafortune, and Carrie Sweet; great grandchildren Elizabeth, Jayden, and Jayla; a brother, Dr. Smith Gibson, and sisters, Elizabeth Carroll, Carrie Elliott, and Kathy Bailey.

The family thanks everyone at Autumn Wood in Claremore for the wonderful care they gave Myrtle the past 11 months. Thank you also to Rose Rock Hospice. Private service planned. Moore's Southlawn 918-663-2233
