Nancy Josephine Neal Smith was born on September 30th, 1942 at St. John's Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma and died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Monday, December 19th, 2016 at St. John's. She was the first born of the late James Lane Neal and Josephine Dow Neal. Nancy spent the majority of her life in the Tulsa area. She was an avid gardener, gourmet cook, and elegant hostess. Nancy loved hosting exchange students from abroad in her home, teaching them about Tulsa and the value of international travel. Her grace, poise, and intellect will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She was a 1960 graduate of Tulsa Edison High School, attended Northwestern University for a year, and received her B.A. in English from the University of Tulsa, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She taught English at both Central and Edison High Schools, was active in the Junior League and the Tulsa Community Chest, and volunteered at both Holland Hall and Eliot Elementary. Since college, she cherished time with the women in her MSG ("Meaningful Support Group").
Nancy is survived by her husband of 39 years, Jim Smith of Claremore; three children, Chris Dickason of Tulsa, Tracy Smith of Austin, TX, and Lindsay Smith of Dallas, TX, and a stepson, Foster Smith of Darien, CT. She is also survived by 3 grandchildren; Connor Dickason of Tulsa, OK, and Megan & Calvin Smith of Darien, CT; as well as 2 sisters, Betsy Dawes of Atherton, CA and Lisa Neal of Les Barthes, France.
Memorial service will be 2:00 P.M., Sunday, February 26, 2017 at Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch, Claremore, OK.
