Murphy, Nay F., 96, of Tulsa, OK, passed away Mon., Feb. 20, 2017. Born to James and Bertha Murphy on March 5, 1920 in Locust Grove, OK. He graduated from Locust Grove High School where he played center on the basketball team, and was recognized as an outstanding all county basketball player. He became interested in Model-T Fords and began working as a mechanic after high school. In 1942 he married Evelyn Rowena Boyd from Rose, OK.
After the Pearl Harbor bombing of World War Il, he joined the Air Force and trained as an aircraft mechanic, then was assigned to start a school for flying crews of the B-24 bomber, which was built in Tulsa. He discharged from the Air Force as a Master Sergeant and returned to Tulsa where he served in the National Guard and opened Murphy Auto Service. He ran his own auto repair shop until 1977, was active in the Independent Garage Owners Association, and served on Tulsa Area Safety Council Vehicle Inspection Program.
After retiring in 1985 he traveled in their motor home, kept busy repairing and selling lawn mowers, and meeting friends daily for coffee. He attended and served as a volunteer handyman for Aldersgate United Methodist Church and Briarwood Pool.
He is survived by daughters, Evelyn Brewster, Barbara Campbell & husband, Scott,
Debbie Crotchett & husband, Ralph; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren;
sister, Nancy Chalmers. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Rowena (Boyd) Murphy; his parents; and his brother.
