Nelma Jo Hayter was born October 18, 1922 in Frederick, OK to Jetty Melvin and Mary Ellen (Hardy) Hayter. She went to be with the Lord on February 15, 2017 in Tulsa, OK.
She was a member of the Skedee United Methodist Church. During her childhood, her family moved from Frederick to Payne County and then to Skedee. After graduation from Skedee High School, she moved to Tulsa and worked for Douglas until the end of WWII. She worked a few years at Oklahoma Fixture and then Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. and AT&T. She worked for the central offices as deskman, trouble reporter and dispatcher. After retiring, she continued working with Pioneers of America, a non-profit organization. She enjoyed traveling to different countries, volunteering in Tulsa, and crafting.
Nelma Jo was preceded in death by her parents, Jetty and Ellen Hayter; sister, Neva June Peckenpaugh; a nephew by marriage, Douglas Harshbarger; and a great-great nephew, Holden Lee Peckenpaugh.
She is survived by a nephew, Loris J. Peckenpaugh and wife, Shirley; two nieces, Jo Ann Harshbarger and Nancy Kay Brien and husband Morris. Four great-nieces and three great-nephews, five great-great nieces and nine great-great nephews and great-great-great niece and nephew as well as many relatives and friends.
There will be a day of viewing in Tulsa on Friday, February 17, 2017, 10:00 A.M. til 8:00 P.M. at Moore's Rosewood Chapel, 2570 S. Harvard. Funeral services will be held in Pawnee, OK, 2:00 P.M. Monday, February 20, 2017, at Poteet Funeral Home, 600 Illinois Street. Interment will be at Pawnee Highland Cemetery.
