Obituary

Monday, December 6, 1937, Nelson and Mattie Wallace welcomed their second bouncing baby boy, Nelson Jr., into the world. Nelson was baptized and confirmed at Saint Monica Catholic Church at an early age. He also attended Saint Monica Catholic School where he graduated in 1956. After graduating he followed his older brother into military service, enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1957 to 1959, and was honorably discharged.

Soon after returning to Tulsa, Nelson met the love of his life, Glory D. Metcalf, whom he affectionately called "Gloria". Nelson & Gloria were married on August 24, 1960.

Nelson was a man of many talents and found his calling as an Auto/Diesel mechanic, starting his career with the City of Tulsa in May of 1977. He showcased his expertise time and time again, as he moved up the ranks with the City, where he became the First Black Master Mechanic. After receiving this distinction, he served as "Shop Foreman" in several different city facilities, maintaining their vast fleet of equipment and vehicles to service the City of Tulsa. Nelson retired in March of 1998, after 20+ years of service.

On April 5, 1977, Nelson became a friend of Bill W. Through this new relationship, he also made several supportive lifelong friends.

Post retirement, Nelson filled his days pouring his love for cars into several hobby builds, most notably "Old Blue", his cherished 1968 Ford F100. He also loved to spend time with some of his best friends at "The Social Club" (Rentie Brothers Salvage Yard).

Nelson leaves behind a younger brother and sister, David (Wichita, KS) and Sandra Wallace (Norman, OK). Six children, Willie Mae Lightner, Kevin Wallace, Timothy Wallace (Erma), Gina Figures, Keith Wallace, and Nelson Wallace III (Janea). Nine beloved grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other amazing family members and friends.

Nelson will be laid to rest at Fort Gibson National Cemetery with full military honors.

Our most sincere gratitude to Moore's Funeral Home for their kindness and attention to details.
