Nolan Russell Harris's Obituary

Nolan Russell Harris was born February 2, 1923 in Grand Chain, Illinois and died September 6, 2014 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He graduated with a class of fifteen students from a small high school in Grand Chain, Illinois and later completed various technical school courses in aeronautics and electronics. Nolan served honorably during World War II in the Army Air Force. He was married October 9, 1943 to Janice Alyene Moon. They moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and had two children, Hammon Rand (Thomas Schroeder) and Ellen Gay (David Asher). Nolan has five grandchildren from his daughter Ellen: John (Noemi Gallardo), Seth (Ginger Owens), Sally, Casey, and Christopher. He is predeceased by his wife who died in May 2013, by his sister, Lyla Ruth Brown, who died in September 2013, and by his parents, Flay and Grace Harris. For most of his working life, Nolan was employed by IBM as a Customer Service Engineer when Tulsa was "The Oil Capital of the World." He serviced the famous IBM Selectric typewriters that were commonly in use before computers in most downtown business offices. Being very precise and meticulous, it seemed as though he could fix just about anything. During his life, Nolan held various other jobs including butcher. He enjoyed gardening and created a beautiful outdoor space for the enjoyment of many at the home he occupied for 48 years. He was a bicycling enthusiast and participated for many years in "Oklahoma Freewheel" rides and bike rides in other states including Tennessee and California. He worked very, very hard for many years to support his family. Nolan was a man of great calm, wisdom, and amazing inner strength. He is greatly loved and will be missed beyond words to express.
