Obituary

Oneta Gene Wyatt was born June 19, 1932 in Texhoma, Oklahoma to Cecil Eugene and Beatrice Delora (Rhoades) Wyatt. She passed away Sunday morning, at St. Francis Hospital at the age of 86.

After leaving Texhoma, Oneta and her family lived in Wichita and Sallisaw before moving to Turley in the 8th grade. Oneta graduated from Tulsa Central High in 1950.

On September 19, 1952 Oneta married the love of her life, Lee Roles. They shared 66 wonderful years together.

Having a family was important to both Lee and Oneta. With the arrival of children, Oneta chose to be at home with the girls. As they grew, Oneta loved being homemaker and mom. It was constantly seen in the little things that she would do with, and for them. At one point Oneta went back into the work force but after 10 years, she was back doing exactly what she loved. This time though, it was caring for her aging parents. Later, caring for others took on a whole new dimension when grandchildren and great-grandchildren started arriving. Both she and Lee loved being surrounded by family.

In 1966, Lee and Oneta moved to Inola to enjoy the benefits of country living. Having land of their own, Lee was able to return to his first love, cows. Oneta, not so much. Having cows around was a growing experience for Oneta. She soon realized that raising cattle, quite often meant, more than one person would be required. But with practice and experience, she learned that if she waved her arms big and used the magic word "Boo", the cows would turn away. Or maybe it was her daughter turning away to hide her laughter.

With Lee working at American Airlines and the benefits of flying, Oneta was always ready for the next trip. She and Lee loved taking the girls to new, exciting locations. The first couple of trips were to Los Angeles and Southern California. Later, they would venture to new places. One time, it was a trip to NYC where they would then fly across the states, on the new 747, to Southern California. A few years later, they opted for Acapulco. Upon arriving, Oneta quickly discovered this new place was not her cup of tea. The next morning, the family was off once again, to Southern California. Eventually, she discovered Hawaii, which quickly became her new favorite place to visit.

Later in years, Lee and Oneta took the opportunity to travel to Europe. While there, they saw all kinds of interesting sites, great works of art, beautiful architecture and charming locations. But if you asked her about a favorite story, every time it would be when they first arrived to London. She and Lee were riding on the up escalator after leaving the subway. All was going well until somehow Lee ended up no longer standing but instead lying stretched out on the escalator. The problem was, his feet were guiding the way while his head, trailing several steps lower, would be the last part of him to arrive at the top. At that point there was not much that could happen except enjoy the ride and look at the ceiling. Oneta really wanted to help, but when you have an opportunity to laugh at something as funny as that, well you do. And she did. And every time she told the story, she would laugh again.
Oneta was survived by 3 daughters, Kristy and Don Grounds, LaNeta and Len Smith, and Trisha and Ricky Rowlan. 7 Grandchildren, Chris Grounds, David Grounds, Hunter & Natalie Smith, Denver & Erin Smith and KiLynn Smith. 4 Great Grandchildren, Quinn & Everest Smith, Fynn & Wyatt Smith, 3 Sister-in-Laws, Carolyn & Tom Spurlock, Janie and Ted Robinson, Judy and Dolan Sproull and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lee Roles, her parents Cecil and Delora Wyatt, Sister and Brother-in-Law Carla and Bill Chase, Father & Mother-in-Law Lee and Ivah Roles.
