Opal Mae Hammett at age 101 died of natural causes on Sunday, February 27, 2022. She was born in Baxter County, Arkansas to J.C. Wallis and Martha Ellen Wallis. She grew up in Big Flat, Arkansas. Early in her life the family moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma; their first home in Oklahoma was Bruner Station, Oklahoma. Opal was a graduate of Tulsa Central High School. Opal Mae Wallis and Thurman Wesley Hammett were married on February 23, 1939. They enjoyed building a happy life and family together. Opal was a loyal and faithful wife to her husband Thurman Wesley Hammett for over 60 years, and set a powerful example of love and devotion as she assisted him in life. Opal was a very attentive and caring mother to their three sons. Unquestionably the matriarch of her family, she devoted much of her life to raising and caring for her family and spent enormous time assisting them in spiritual, intellectual and physical development. In spite of a growing family, Opal found time as an active member of Bethel Baptist, Southern Hills and the First Baptist Church of Tulsa. Opal continued her commitment to church where she actively taught Sunday School classes for many years and was chairwoman of the kitchen committee.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents; a loving brother, Hurshel; her beloved husband Thurman Wesley and her grandchildren Don David, Tiffany and Walter. She is survived by her sons: Hamms Leon and Thurman Dale and Danny Ray and families; niece Cathy Crain and family. Survivors also include 5 grandchildren and Opal's beautiful great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Mother had a fearlessness about her that I hope we all have inherited. She has faced with courage and joy all that life has thrown her way; She has never shielded away from it. She set standards for us all to aspire. After all, as a young person, she did regularly sneak into Cain's Ballroom to see her childhood idol Bob Wills with the Texas Playboys! We are so lucky to have had her in our lives. Mother loved the Texas Rangers, who were her world champions! May you rest in eternal peace with your loving husband, our precious Mother.

The burial will occur at 1 o'clock on Saturday at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5111 S. Memorial Dr, Tulsa 74145.
