Peggy Jane Powell Bains was born September 4, 1936, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and died May 18, 2024. She was the youngest child of John Wilson Powell and Catherine "Katie" Powell. Her siblings were Marilyn, Jack and Patsy Powell.
She graduated from Will Rogers High School Tulsa in 1954 and attended the University of Tulsa where she was a Chi Omega. It was there that she met the love of her life L.D. Bains, and they were married September 4, 1959, upon his return from serving in the U.S. Army in Germany.
Peggy enjoyed her diversified jobs during her 62 years of marriage to L.D. as she followed her high school coaching husband to towns in Oklahoma. She was a switchboard operator, (the old Andy Griffith kind); Executive Secretary, Administrative Assistant; legal secretary; Avon representative; church secretary; Women's Editor for the Hugo Daily News and for a short time selling women's' fashions.
Peggy's devotion was to her husband, children, her God, her Country and the Episcopal Church. She was an avid supporter of her husband who made quite a name for himself coaching high school football in Oklahoma. His awards were boundless.
Peggy is preceded in death by her parents, Wilson and Katie Powell; sisters, Marilyn Williams, Patsy Powell and brother, Jack Powell. She is survived by two children, Greg Bains and his wife, Angie of Claremore, OK and Vicki Bains of Norman, OK; grandchildren, Ashley Hamblin, Mallory Hamblin, Ryan Hamblin and his wife, Laura all of Norman, OK, Katie and Matthew Bains of Claremore, OK; great-grandchildren, Scout Treaftis, Jaxon and Hunter Hamblin all of Norman, OK; nephews, Jay Powell and his wife, Mary Scott, Jack Powell; Johnny Williams and his wife, Chaundra; niece, Tracey Ellett and her husband Steve; and many wonderful nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Services will be held 12 Noon, Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in Broken Arrow. Burial following in Memorial Park Cemetery at 2:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Patrick's Church or the L.D. Bains Foundation at any Bancfirst location.
