GARY -PEGGY JANE BREWSTER, age 89, born December 11, 1932 in Columbus, MS. and died October 11, 2022 in Tulsa, OK. She was a graduate of the University of Mississippi, Oxford.
From an early age her father encouraged her to pursue many interests. Peggy worked as Assistant to the President of United Rubber Workers Union in Memphis, TN and later for Memphis Beautiful, an organization of which she spoke fondly. She married Walter H. Gary of Eupora, MS and they remained in Memphis while her husband completed his residency in Radiology at the University of Tennessee and the John Gaston Hospital. They lived right behind the hospital so Peggy could have the car for work and Walter could ride his bike to the hospital. They moved to Tulsa in 1961.
While her husband and children were paramount in her life, she became very involved in many civic organizations including the Tulsa Boys Home and the Children's Day Nursery (two of her favorites). Tulsa Philharmonic, Tulsa Opera, KKG Alumni Assoc, CU Chapter of PEO, EFFS Volunteer for Foreign Students, Friends of the Tulsa Library, Gilcrease Museum and Gillie Associates were groups Peggy worked with over the years.
As a long-time member of Boston Avenue United Methodist Church, Peggy taught in the children's departments during the primary years. She and Walter were part of the early Mission program to Haiti, active in the Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class, served on the Administrative Board and supported the Methodist Foundation.
Her family remembers her talent for decorating, her gourmet cooking which resulted in decades of delights, and her consistent love and willingness to help in all situations.
Peggy is preceded in death by her beloved husband Walter and parents, Anita and Paul George Brewster of West Point, MS. She is survived by her daughter, Lucia Deichmann (Jens) of Santa Fe, son Walter Brewster Gary of Tulsa, grandchildren, Sophia Deichmann of Santa Fe and Eric Deichmann of Albuquerque, sister Carolyn Lester of Plano, TX, and two nieces Christy Byrne (Dick) of Fredericksburg, TX and Kate Kemmerer of Dallas, TX.
A private memorial service will be held at Boston Avenue United Methodist Church in Tulsa, at a later date to be determined.
