Obituary

Percy Mizelle, son, brother, husband, father, Air Force veteran and resident of Tulsa since 1976 passed away Tuesday, March 19th, 2019 at the age of 91.

He was born in New Jersey and was the oldest of seven children, four boys and three girls, and is survived by four of them. Percy grew up in a family with a single head of household working and the need to rent space to additional boarders to help with finances. It was a joyful home and the gathering place for the children's friends. They did not have much but willingly gave to others. At a young age, as the eldest, he was tasked with keeping the younger kids in line which gave him his serious demeanor. But, as he aged and matured and was encouraged by his siblings, he became a much more loving person and was very generous with his emotions.

In his younger years, he was an avid aviator, enjoyed riding motorcycles and boating but mostly he loved doing things that would bring his family happiness.

As an employee of Cities Service, he moved his family here from New Jersey with the hopes of building a long life together. The family joined the local tennis club, became involved in his son's after school activities and joined the local church. He coached his son's little league team, taught him how to work on cars and lead by example on how to be a respectful and responsible man.

A longtime member of Asbury Methodist Church, Percy enjoyed his time in both the singing and bell choirs as well as volunteering to be one of the bus drivers for church trips. He was a quiet man, with a dignified disposition but those who were lucky enough to break through his stern look found him to be a genuine, honest man with a quick wit and a great sense of humor. Those who knew him know it was always a joy to hear him laugh.

His son graduated high school and college in Oklahoma and Percy and his wife began their empty nest years. They were beginning to enjoy their retirement years but unfortunately she passed suddenly in 2005, two weeks shy of their 49th wedding anniversary. Her passing was something he struggled with until his death. His involvement with the church helped him to persevere and his son was a frequent visitor. He called him daily to see how he was doing and helped to bring his spirits up.

The words most used to describe Percy were honorable, trustworthy, faithful, independent, quiet, happy, loving, stern, stubborn, wise, intelligent, full of life and fiery (many of you may not know he was a natural redhead as a child). He was adored by those who knew him and will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer a donation in his name to the Asbury Methodist Church Choir of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Donations are also encouraged for the Clarehouse in Tulsa, Oklahoma. < https://www.clarehouse.org/donate/ >

Thank you for your kind consideration, thoughts and prayers and for all of you who have reached out to offer your condolences to the family. May he rest in peace.

Services will be held 11AM, Saturday, March 30th, 2019 in the Mason Chapel at Asbury Methodist Church, 6767 S. Mingo Road, Tulsa, OK 74133, PH: (918) 492-1771
