Obituary

Philip Andrew Matthews entered this world on April 21, 1938, in Guatemala, and completed his earthly journey on August 11, 2026. Born to an English father and a Portuguese mother, Phil's life began among many languages and cultures. At twelve, his family sent him to the United States where he attended San Marcus Academy in Texas. Here, he built a life with courage, curiosity, and quiet determination. He taught himself English, became a naturalized citizen, and spoke two other languages so naturally that many never knew the remarkable story behind his voice. He graduated from San Marcus Academy in Texas and then earned a bachelor's degree in science from the University of Tulsa. He later became a registered nurse through Tulsa Junior College. Nursing was more than Phil's profession; it was one of the many ways he cared for others. His distinguished career spanned decades, including his final twenty years at St. John Medical Center, where he served as head nurse of orthopedic surgery. At his retirement celebration, more than one hundred people gathered to wish him well-and to wish, with all their hearts, that he would stay. Their presence spoke volumes about the skill, steadiness, and kindness he brought into every room.

For all he accomplished, Phil's greatest achievement was his family. His wife, Marian Matthews, has lost not only her husband, but her best friend-a truth made all the more poignant by the more than five decades they shared. They met fifty-six years ago, dated for two years, and married on June 15, 1973. Phil stepped wholeheartedly into the role of Dad to three young children: Warren, Paul, and Stewart Matthews. They survive him, and each will tell you that he did not merely fill that role; he made it his own with extraordinary love. He taught them to fish, tie their own lures, hunt, cut wood, and understand the dignity of a hard day's work. More importantly, he showed them what it meant to be supported without condition. He encouraged each child to become the truest and best version of themselves, often working quietly from the shadows-listening more than speaking, offering advice without lecturing, and helping them question their paths without ever allowing them to question their worth. Phil measured success not by what he achieved for himself, but by what the people he loved became. Their joy was his joy, their accomplishments were his pride, and he gladly told anyone who would listen just how proud he was of them.

Nowhere was that devotion more evident than in his love for Marian. Phil was her rock, her refuge, and her most faithful champion. To the world, she was a CEO and an exceptionally successful businesswoman; to Phil, she was the woman whose gifts he never tired of celebrating. His pride in her shone in his eyes whenever he spoke of her achievements over his own. She could bring him her worries, and he would steady her. She could doubt herself, but he never joined her in that doubt. He listened, offered advice, and then stood beside her without question, whatever decision she made. Their marriage was not simply a long life shared; it was a lasting friendship built from admiration and a love that made each of them stronger.

Phil's heart had room for every branch of his family. He is also survived by his children from a prior marriage, Tony Matthews and Debbie Youngblood, and he was grateful to be in their lives. He spoke of them with the same unmistakable joy and pride he carried for all those he loved.

Those who will carry Phil's memory forward include Marian Matthews, his wife of fifty-four years; his children, Warren Matthews; Paul Matthews and Paul's husband, Chace Matthews; Stewart Matthews and Stewart's husband, Cody Matthews; Tony Matthews and Tony's wife, Dana Matthews; and Debbie Youngblood. He also leaves Gayla Zeigler, who may not have been his daughter by birth but held a daughter's place in his heart. His nine grandchildren brought him immeasurable happiness: Christine Bailey-Matthews and her husband Nate, Heather Matthews, Meg Grier, Haley Railey, Fletcher Matthews, Kara Matthews, Tate Matthews, Parker Matthews, and MJ Matthews. He also cherished his great-grandchildren: Taegan Bailey, Delaina McAlexander, Ethan Doctor, Emmalyn Railey, Maddison Railey, and Izzy McAlexander. Each of them knew the gift of being loved by Phil, and each now carries a part of him into the days ahead.

Phil never confined his care and encouragement to family alone. He was a loyal friend to many, and his kindness reached farther than any list of names could hold. At eighty-eight, he had already said goodbye to many dear friends; perhaps, in the world beyond this one, they are among those welcoming him home. What is certain is that the love he gave so freely remains here-in the people he guided, comforted, believed in, and made better simply by being himself.

Years ago, a room overflowing with colleagues gathered to celebrate Phil's retirement, wishing him well and wishing he would stay. Today, those who love him must offer that same impossible farewell. We send Philip Andrew Matthews onward with gratitude for every lesson, every quiet kindness, every word of encouragement, and every ordinary day made precious by his presence. We wish him peace-and we wish, with all our hearts, that he could have stayed a little longer. Until we are together again: we love you, we will miss you, and we are better because you were here. Rest in peace, Phil.
