Rachel Leigh Cowart
Born: March 27, 1985
Died: 15 January 2013
Rachel was born in the Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut and was 28 years young at the time of her passing. She is the fourth child of Robert and Susan Cowart of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her infant brother, Christopher, preceded her in death.
When she was only a week old, Rachel was diagnosed with multiple medical issues related to her heart and endured years of surgery, beating the odds and proving the doctors wrong who said she would not live beyond infancy. Rachel was a fighter and, although she was a child with special needs, her physical and mental challenges did not keep her from enjoying life with her family and friends. She took part in Special Olympics sports for the better part of her life, and enjoyed playing T-ball and being on the bowling league at the local bowling alley.
During her lifetime, Rachel and her family lived in the communities of Naugatuck, CT, Marietta, GA, Richmond, KY, Fort Walton Beach, FL, and Tulsa, OK. In each place, she had a positive influence on those who came to know and love her.
Attendance every Sunday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was a big part of Rachel's life. She loved her church family and loved listening to the music. Her favorite movie was a musical; The Sound of Music. Often you could find her in her bedroom with that movie playing on her television. Whether around the house or in the family car, in her bedroom, or wherever, she loved to sing. And although her words weren't always perfect, the melody usually was and it gave her family great joy.
Rachel's passing leaves a big hole in the hearts of her family. But the knowledge that they will be a family once again in the eternities helps to ease the pain of the loss.
