Randell Lee Goodsell Obituary
Randy L. Goodsell, 75, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on December 23,
2023. Randy lived his life with a deep love for family and respect for all. He was born on
August 7, 1948 to Wilbur and Faye Goodsell in Tulsa, OK, and was the youngest of three boys.
Randy graduated from Will Rogers High School in 1966, where he was the quarterback and
team captain of a very successful Roper football team receiving many honors. After high
school, Randy went on to attend Northeastern State University on a full scholarship, where his
older brother Rusty was already playing football. Randy married Cindy Bailey on June 19,
1969. Their 13 year union gave them two beautiful children, twins, Lance and Amy, who he
loved and adored. He and Cindy remained friends and shared in raising both of their children
as Christians. Randy then met and married his soulmate, Maggie Speer Green, on August 22,
1987, and devoted his life to her. In addition to Lance and Amy, a sweet step-daughter named
Angie rounded out his family. Together Randy and Maggie shared 3 children, 9 grandchildren,
and 1 great grandson.
Throughout his career Randy served as head football coach and teacher at several Tulsa Public
Schools, Metro Christian Academy, and Coalgate Public Schools. He was also an assistant
football coach at the University of Tulsa. Randy began working at Hilldale Public Schools in
1988, where he served as head football coach and Athletic Director. In 1995, Randy became
the Assistant Superintendent at Hilldale Public Schools, where he finished out his last 17 years
in education. In 2010-2011 he was awarded Oklahoma Administrator of the Year as the
Assistant Superintendent. Randy enjoyed his role as the Director of Indian Education as one of
his Assistant Superintendent duties. He loved taking care of Native American students at
Hilldale, and he felt theirs was the most important culture in American History.
Randy was a simple man with a good heart. He was baptized at the age of 11, and again at the
age of 54 when he really understood and gave his heart to Jesus. He said life is really hard to
live, but Jesus makes it easier. Growing up, he loved raising homing pigeons and thought he
was the guru of pigeons. Playing sports was his passion. In his retirement years he loved
playing golf and being with his golfing buddies. He loved breaking out the boat and fishing with
Maggie, watching sports and westerns, working in the yard, and going by Hilldale to visit with
the secretaries he had worked with for many years. Most of all, he loved going to watch his
grandchildren. Oh how he loved his grandchildren!
He looked up to his older brothers Rodney and Rusty. Even though he grew up being cheated
by them at Mumbly Peg, he thought they were "all that" in everything they did. He admired them
as Eagle Scouts and as college student-athletes. He said he was along for the ride, and they
always cleared the path for him. He counted it as a real privilege to be the youngest of the
Goodsell brothers. His brothers taught him how to take target practice with Dad's 22 rifle in the
backyard (within the city limits!). At 13, they taught him how to take the car out for a spin
around the block when their parents were at work. He was also made to stand against the wall,
while they threw darts around him, as if that were okay and normal.
Randy loved his Sunday School class. Like all of us, he dreamed about what heaven would be
like. Randy is now finally at peace and resting comfortably in heaven. He will be missed greatly
and thought of often, with love. Family and friends remember him as a fun and caring person.
He was always wanting to do family things. He was a very organized educator and person, a
dynamic coach, and a devoted golfer. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and
great-grandfather.
Randy is preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Faye Goodsell, his brothers Rodney and
Rusty Goodsell. He is survived by his wife Maggie, son Lance Goodsell and daughter-in-law
Diana, daughter Amy Baker and son-in-law Randy, daughter Angie Gagan and son-in-law
Raymond. He is survived by his grandchildren Hallie, Landry, and Camille Baker; Caitlin, Ashlin,
and Brooklin Goodsell; Tristen, Troy and granddaughter-in-law Emily, and Trent Gagan, and
great-grandson Tripp. He is also survived by his stepmother Mary Lue Goodsell, stepsisters
Terry Lee and Cindy Au, stepbrother Rodney Epp, numerous nieces and nephews, extended
family members, and a community full of lifelong friends.
