Obituary

Surrounded by family, Richard Dale Smith passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 8, 2024.

In a world that can often use an extra dose of joy, we remember Richard, a man whose life was a delightful blend of faith, laughter, and well-timed quotes from "Christmas Vacation." He loved fly fishing with his sons, knew a meal wasn't a meal without hot buttered bread, and was proud to be the starting (armchair) quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners.

Richard was born on December 15, 1949, in Newport News, Virginia to Lanceford Smith and Minnie Cole Manning Smith. He attended Wichita Falls High School, Midwestern State University, and Southern Methodist University, acquiring an education that helped shape his career in banking, entrepreneurship, and church administration.

Not only did Richard have a distinguished career in these key areas, but he also held the prestigious position of Chief Spoiling Officer to his wife, Jan, for 27 years. Her impeccable wardrobe is courtesy of Richard's abundant generosity, excellent taste, and uncanny ability to convince her that the sweater is too pretty to be wasted on a hanger. Their date nights at the White Lion were a testament to his commitment to keeping the romance alive, as were the fresh flowers lovingly and regularly left on her piano.

He was blessed with 3 sons and 2 bonus children, all of whom loved him greatly and proudly carry the torch of delivering a strategically-placed "it's all part of the experience" when things aren't going as planned.

Richard undoubtedly adored his wife and his children, but anyone paying attention knows that his 12 grandchildren were the true MVPs. Ellie, Rubee, Eli, Avelynn, Wyatt, Ethan, Evan, Scarlett, Felicity, Dylan, Gavin, and Crosby brought "Pops" endless delight. They fondly recall the warmth of his kindness, the joy he brought to even their worst days, and the fun he injected into every moment. He made a point to be there for milestone moments and never left room for doubt about his love for them. He enjoyed nothing more than an afternoon spent at Braum's eating ice cream, listening to the highs of his grandkids' days, and making them laugh about the lows. Even the little ones speak to the joy he brought to their lives through the "high fives that hurt Pops' hands."

He had a passion for Jesus above all, followed by a love for shopping, Bee Gees tunes, Duke basketball, and the Tuesday morning men's Bible study of which he was a faithful participant. His landscaping was meticulous, turning his yard into a sanctuary where dandelions feared to tread. His love for a flawless exterior extended to his beloved 2007 Corvette, always gleaming in the driveway.

He cherished his relationship with Jesus and walked the walk in real and meaningful ways. His compassion, generosity, and ability to make everyone feel valued created a community that extended beyond his family and friends. He was a dedicated volunteer, spending time each week serving his community at FBC Tulsa's Caring Center, bringing laughter and warmth to those who needed it most. Richard found solace in service, proving that he had a heart as big as his shoe collection. His commitment to his neighbors was rivaled only by his commitment to his two King Charles Cavalier Spaniels, whose companionship provided a constant source of joy.

Richard is survived by his wife, Jan Smith, of Bixby, OK; children Bryan Smith & wife Megan of Austin, TX, Nick Smith & wife Amy of Jenks, OK, Jeff Smith of Amarillo, TX, Donovan Buck & wife Laci of Pflugerville, TX, Bri Hines & husband Cole of Tulsa, OK; brothers Lance Smith, Jr. & wife Pauline of Newport News, VA, Jesse Ryan & wife Kelli of Choctaw, OK; and his 12 beloved grandchildren.

His absence leaves a void that can only be filled with memories of his infectious laughter, perfect lawn, and a heart that reached out to those in need. As we bid farewell, we remember Richard for the joy he spread and the high fives that left a lasting impression on our hands and our hearts. We find comfort in knowing that he now has the answers to his many burning questions about Heaven, while those of us who remain earth side are left to wonder. But we are steadfast in our hope that the landscaping is immaculate, his Christmas lights are never tangled, and that Richard feels all the love that earth still holds for him.
