Obituary

Robert Curry Mayfield, Jr., 67, Tulsa, OK, went to be with the Lord on March 5, 2020.

Born September 18, 1952, in Williamsport, IN, he was the son of the late Robert C. Mayfield, Sr. and Ruth (Fitzwater) Mayfield.

Living in Northern Indiana for his formative years, Bob became a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan. He had an affinity for many sports teams, including the university teams in Indiana, Maryland, West Virginia and Oklahoma.

Bob overcame many obstacles in his life with a tenacious spirit, diligence and hard work. At the age of five, in 1957, Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Chicago began treating him for congenital hip issues. Through their superior care and Bob's determination, he was able to walk without assistance for more than 55 years.

As a result of cognitive deficiencies from birth, many educational opportunities were limited to Bob, as a child, but his parents worked with him to achieve his fullest potential. Through their combined efforts, Bob became a diligent reader of the newspaper and his Bible, each day. Bob always had a sharp wit and a quick smile.

Bob attended various rehab and development services throughout his youth and young adulthood. He lived in both Fort Wayne, Indiana and Baltimore, Maryland, away from his family, to obtain specialized services. He learned various life skills, including cooking, and assisted with that family duty on a regular basis.

Throughout his life, Bob worked in janitorial positions and various other roles, as he was able. Since moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma, Bob has been employed by Goodwill Industries of Tulsa, where he developed deep relationships with coworkers and supervisors. Goodwill provided Bob a safe and supportive environment that embraced him, regardless of the challenges he needed to overcome. It was his pride and joy to be a part of Goodwill for 24 years, and he received the 2014 Employee of the Year award.

Bob was dedicated to the Lord as a child by his Pastor parents, and he developed a strong and pure faith in God. A tender-hearted man, Bob cared deeply for the suffering of others. Through his faithful church attendance, most recently SpiritLife Church, Tulsa, Bob knew the joy of worshiping God and enjoying the fellowship of other believers.

Bob is survived by his siblings, David Mayfield, Tulsa; Esther Harper and husband, John, Tulsa; Marilyn Krause and husband, David, Lawrenceville, NJ; and John Mayfield, Tulsa. He is also survived by his beloved nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. Bob was always a GREAT uncle!

In lieu of flowers, the family requests cash memorial donations to Goodwill Industries of Tulsa, 2800 Southwest Blvd., Tulsa, OK 74107, in thanks for the many years they have dedicated to supporting Bob and his family.
