Obituary

Rollo Donald Redburn, age 86, decided he had hugged enough people here and moved on to his heavenly mansion on August 11, 2015. Rollo joins his wife, Angelin Lavina "Sam" Redburn, who preceded him in death in 2006.

Rollo grew up in Erie, Kansas, meeting his future wife there. Rollo worked on the family farm, at the creamery in Erie, on the railroad and then joined the Army Corp of Engineers. He served in the Korean War, building camps and bridges, maintaining motor pool vehicles, supplying the front lines and heading up bomb disposal/demolition efforts in numerous locations. After serving in Korea, Rollo returned to his Kansas home and served 5 years in the Army Reserve. He attended barber school in Tulsa. Suffering the wrath of an eventually prosecuted official, Rollo and one of his school mates became the only two people to fail the Kansas barber exam. Thus, he kept his family in Tulsa to open a business. Rollo operated Rollo's Barber Shop located at 73rd East Avenue and Admiral Boulevard, and became a very popular barber because of his skill at crew-cuts and flattops. When the property where his shop was located was sold to accommodate a future Wendy's restaurant, he relocated the shop to his home. At the insistence of his wife "Sam," Rollo learned to style and color hair and the barber shop was renamed Rollo's Style Shop. Sam conducted style shows to help support her hair care products business, and Rollo became a frequent guest artist/demonstrator at these shows.

Rollo didn't watch TV and music wasn't that important to him until later in life when he developed a liking for Johnny Cash. He felt a responsibility to work and support his family, help others, and study the Bible. For many years, Rollo tirelessly volunteered his time to visit nursing homes and cut the hair of residents for free. Rollo and Sam worked for years with youth groups at the churches they attended, making their home a place where teens could go any time they wanted to, opening up their home several times to teens who had no other place to live. Rollo loved fishing and camping and enjoyed taking his family to the lake on the weekends or to visit relatives in NE OK and SE KS. He loved being around family and made many trips with family to exotic locations like Lake Tenkiller, Grand Lake, Silver Dollar City and Las Vegas (without the kids). Rollo helped coach little league teams, played on fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball teams, and sponsored teams through Rollo's Style Shop, all to be with his sons. Rollo smoked pipes, cigars and cigarettes until the Surgeon General declared that it was unhealthy for him and his non-smoking family – so he quit cold-turkey. Rollo was mechanically inclined and spent many hours repairing cars and small engines for family and friends.

In his later years, Rollo became a baker of wonderful homemade bread. Those familiar with his baking routine knew to avoid visits on the days he made "stinky feet bread" because the smell of it before it was finished was reminiscent of – well, thus the name. The bread tasted great, however. Rollo learned how to work on personal computers, and up until he lost most of his sight and hearing, and with the help of more capable friends, he would collect old PC's and restore them for people who could not afford to buy one. He not only loved to work on PC's, he loved to play on them with friends and family, hosting Worlds of Warcraft nights for his grandsons and friends. Regardless of his impressive hair-styling skills, Rollo said he was a barber. He loved his customers, talking about family, and solving the world's problems with them.

Rollo is survived by three sons, Rollo Daniel Redburn of Oklahoma City, David Scott Redburn of Houston and Douglas Wayne Redburn of Inola; their wives, Annette, Joyce and Glenda; 2 sisters, 2 brothers, 9 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and numerous other in-laws, outlaws, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
