Obituary

Ronald Eugene McCullough, age 84, passed away March 25, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. A life-long Tulsan, Ron was born September 30, 1932 to T.F. and Marie Anita (Sheridan) McCullough.

A 1950 graduate of Will Rogers High School, he was active in band and baseball. His senior year he was band captain and left in charge of band class and rehearsals during the music teacher's lengthy illness. He was a talented trumpet player who through the years continued playing in several local dance bands and the Starlight Concert Bands.

Ron attended the University of Tulsa, was a member of Lamda Chi Alpha Fraternity and a successful pitcher on the varsity baseball team. His baseball abilities attracted the attention of several big league organizations, but he suffered a career ending shoulder injury his senior year.

While at TU, he met the love of his life and wife of 63 years, Carol Charlene Putsche. They began their family in 1955 and remained in Tulsa. They were members of Yale Avenue Presbyterian Church. He worked in several different occupations before finding his true calling as an insurance agent for Employers Insurance of Wausau. In 1972, Ron joined a local growing independent insurance agency, Rich & Cartmill Inc., and became a shareholder in 1975. For the next 28 years, he loved working with and taking care of his customers, and being part of an organization that tried very hard to set themselves apart in the industry. His positive attitude, friendly smile, and caring personality were always welcomed by his co-workers and clients.

Family activities were always paramount with Ron. From fishing weekends at Lake Tenkiller, to following softball, cheer leading or coaching baseball from 1969-79. In the mid and late 70s, he coached the Rich & Cartmill Mickey Mantle and American Legion baseball teams.

Ron was the ultimate do-it-yourselfer, completing numerous home improvement projects, garage additions, and auto repairs. In the late 70's, the family's interest in aviation came about. He purchased an abandoned Cessna at a sheriff's sale, restored it with the help of an aircraft mechanic friend, and the family learned to fly in it. Upon his retirement from R&C in 2000, Ron was able to devote full time to the restoration of a 1943 WWII Stearman biplane, which won the Chairman's Choice Award at the 2010 Tulsa Regional Fly-In. He was a member of Experimental Aircraft Association Antique Classic Chapter 10, the Stearman Restorers Association, and the Quiet Birdmen.

He is survived by his wife Charlene, daughter Cheryl Heisten (husband Tom), daughter Karen of the home, son Mike McCullough (wife Jamie), grandchildren Shannon Clark, Christen Merkov, Kevin Sloan, Sara McCullough, Aidan McCullough, and 6 great grandchildren.

Services will be held at the Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel, 5111 S. Memorial Drive, Tulsa at 2PM Friday March 31st. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Meals on Wheels of Tulsa, 12620 E 31st St., Tulsa, OK. 74146, an organization for which Ron and Charlene have worked for many years.
