August 12, 1926 – February 26, 2014
At a church retreat in 1946, Ruby Galloway Farish placed a twig on the campfire and committed her life to serve Jesus Christ. She fulfilled this commitment through passionate service to her family, church, and community. She was born on August 12, 1926 in Delight, Arkansas, to Jess and Bess Galloway. She graduated from Hendrix College and was Director of Christian Education in Little Rock, Arkansas, where she met Dr. J.K Farish, Jr. Their 55-year marriage began on the "Bride and Groom" television show in 1951. Ruby's bright smile and vibrant faith touched many people, organizations, and faith communities. She co-founded The Parent Child Center of Tulsa, volunteered as a chaplain for the Tulsa Police Department, provided support as a 'Listener' with Resonance Center for Women, and served as a Certified Mediator with Early Settlement. She was also regularly involved in prison ministries, crisis counseling, youth ministry, and much more.
Ruby received many honors, including: Tulsa Volunteer of the Year, the Harmon Foundation Award (given for "bringing hope and healing to many"), the Everyday Hero Red Cross Award, and an advocacy award from the Department of Justice. Though she received public recognition, there were many acts of service known only to Ruby. She was a member of Boston Avenue United Methodist Church, an Oblate with St. Joseph Monastery, and she enjoyed participating in Bible studies and small groups. Her zest for life was still apparent at age 87 when she danced at her granddaughter's wedding with her dear friend Gene Robinson. Ruby is survived by Dr. Kent Farish, his wife Leah "Sunny" Farish, Rev. Karen Miller, her husband Dr. Perry Miller, Rev. Jessica Moffatt Seay and four grandchildren: Brian Farish, Colleen Farish Stapp, Elizabeth Miller and Hannah Moffatt.
A service celebrating her life will be held Monday, March 3 at 3:00 p.m. at Boston Avenue United Methodist Church in Tulsa. In lieu of flowers, tax-deductible gifts may be made to the Ruby Farish Memorial Fund, Crossover Community Impact, 2834 E. 26 Place, Tulsa, OK 74114. Crossover Community Impact is a Christian medical clinic and development ministry focusing on community renewal and reconciliation.
