Stephen Nale Heilman, 68, has passed into the undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveler returns. The son of Harold Nale and Bette Maxine Heilman, Stephen entered the world in Baltimore, where he later spent many summers with his beloved grandparents, and grew up in Levittown, Pennsylvania.
As a boy, he enjoyed camping, archery, and canoeing at Lake George, and was proud to have earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He played football for Pennsbury High School and went on to play at William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa, until his time on the field was cut short by a car accident and a traumatic head injury. In college, Stephen was active in the Sigma Phi Sigma fraternity, and after graduating in 1974, he married the love of his life, Carol Chilcote, a single mother from Oskaloosa.
The new family of three then moved to Waldo, Wisconsin, where Stephen worked as a director of OSHA safety compliance at Gilson Brothers and served as Worshipful Master of his Masonic lodge. They welcomed the birth of a son in 1976; and in 1981, the family moved to Tulsa where Stephen took a job at Unit Rig. In 1983, Stephen became Personnel Manager at the Wonder Bread bakery and in 1988, Director of Human Resources for Ramsey Winch and Auto Crane, a position he held for nearly twenty years.
Stephen was dedicated to his profession, earning a master's degree from Northeastern State University and serving as president of the Tulsa chapter of the Industrial Relations Association. He also enjoyed travelling, good food and wine, and the history of the American Revolution and Civil War, though all this was cut short by the early onset of Pick's disease dementia, which may have been brought on by his earlier head trauma.
Stephen is preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Mariann Heilman Asher, and is survived by his wife, Carol; his son, Dr. Jason Stephen Heilman, and daughter-in-law, Rosalyn; his sister, Frances Timson of Camden, Delaware; his granddaughters, Darian Faber, Ciara Asher, Savannah Asher, and Misty Asher; and his great-granddaughters, Serari and Sierra.
