Obituary

Stephen "Steve" Jernigan, 77, of Tulsa, OK, went to be with his Heavenly Father, Wednesday February 5, 2020. He was born on December 28, 1942, in Jackson, MS, to Stephen Alphonse Baginski and Bessie Lois (Matthews) Jernigan. Steve was proud to have served as a Captain in the United States Air Force in the Vietnam War. He held a Master's Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Tulsa University, and worked as a Mechanical Fluid Engineer at Oil Capital Valve, Tulsa, OK. Steve had a sharp wit, keen sense of humor, kind and gentle spirit, and valued his friendships and relationships. He had an amazing memory and power of recall and was known as "the King of all Trivia," because he always won at Trivial Pursuit. Steve was an enthusiastic booster of his alma mater, and was a season ticket holder for both TU football and basketball. He was a semi-pro bowler, enjoyed flying model airplanes, and was an avid sports fan. Steve loved his baseball teams, and could tell you the winners of every World Series, and even who the losing team was. He especially loved the Dodgers, and could recall details of every Dodger World Series winning game, and the losing team, too. Steve had an amazing knowledge of baseball statistics, even back in Mickey Mantle's heydey. When he was in the fourth grade, he knew every statistic about every player on the Yankee and Red Sox teams. He consulted the newspaper for his information, but he never wrote any of it down, he just absorbed it. Steve's immense knowledge of sports statistics wasn't limited to just baseball. He also was a big Dallas Cowboy fan, and could name all the Super Bowl winners and losers. Steve is survived by his wife, of 29 years, Nancy (Brokaw) Jernigan; sons, Stephen "David" Jernigan, Jr. and wife, Yalonda of Oologah, OK, and Chris Turner of Tulsa, OK; daughters, Wendy Williams and husband, Steve, of Tulsa, OK, and Mary Pettit of North Carolina; son-in-law, Richard Lovett; nine grandchildren; sisters, Stephanie Maloney and husband, Thomas of Louisville, KY, and Jane Eichenberger and husband, Paul of Louisville, KY; and a lifetime of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Jennifer Lovett; and daughter-in-law, Andrea Turner. Rest in peace, O Captain, My Captain, Steve, for the final bell has rung, the final bugle sounded, and day is done.

The family requests donations be made in Steve's honor to the "American Cancer Society," and "Suicide Prevention."
