Sybil B. Reid, 93, passed away August 3, 2014, after a brief but courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was born April 16, 1921, in Wilson, OK, to Ernest Thomas and Oma Dell Holloway and grew up in Marietta, OK. She graduated from Marietta High School in 1938 and attended Blackwood-Davis Business College in Oklahoma City. September 14, 1944, she married her high school sweetheart Roy L. Reid, also of Marietta. They made their home in Tulsa for more than 60 years, interrupted only by a few years in Billings, MT, Denver, CO, and Oklahoma City.
Raised in Marietta's First Baptist Church, she joined Memorial Baptist Church after moving to Tulsa. A stay-a-home mother when her children were young, Sybil was a beautiful seamstress and always kept her girls neatly dressed. She also volunteered time at Memorial Baptist, assisting with the newsletter, Sunday school, vacation bible school and other activities. As her children got older, she revived her accounting career and worked for home building/real estate development companies until her retirement.
Sybil was preceded in death by her parents; sister Marie McMeans of Overland Park, KS; brother Roger Holloway of San Antonio, TX; and son-in-law Merle Buss of Shawnee, OK. She is survived by her husband of nearly 70 years; two daughters: Karen Buss of Shawnee, OK, and Janet Knowles (Hugh) of Plano, TX; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Joyce Lofton of McKinney, TX; and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.
In her early years Sybil enjoyed gardening and also square dancing with her husband as a member of the DoSiDo Square Dance club. She later learned the art of china painting, which became her favorite hobby. She was a member of Oil Capital China Painters and the World Organization of China Painters and won numerous ribbons at the Tulsa State Fair. She also enjoyed reading, and even after physical limitations slowed her walking and ended water aerobics, she exercised her mind daily by completing the cryptoquote and crossword puzzle in the Tulsa World.
