Thomas Alan Marberry was born on November 26, 1948 in East St. Louis, Illinois. His parents were Harry and Betty Marberry. He grew up in Oklahoma City, OK in a loving home with a younger sister, Betsy.
As a young boy growing up in Oklahoma in the 50's, he wanted to be a baseball player like Mickey Mantle. He played baseball for many years. He also played golf & basketball in high school and was the team captain of both his senior year.
He graduated from Casady School in Oklahoma City and then went to Vanderbilt University for his undergraduate BA degree in pre-med. He continued his studies at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center for medical school followed by a rotating surgery internship at St. Anthony Hospital, where he was awarded the intern of the year. His Orthopedic Surgery residency was with the O'Donohue program at the Health Sciences Center. Early on, Tom knew he wanted to be a doctor. He had several shoulder injuries and dislocations throughout his participation in sports. This led to an interest in orthopedics and shoulder surgery. He applied for and was accepted as the First Visiting Shoulder Fellow under the tutelage of Charles S. Neer II M.D. at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. (Dr. Neer was unquestionably considered the father of shoulder surgery and developed the first total shoulder.)
Tom practiced in Tulsa, Oklahoma for 35 years as an Orthopedic Surgeon. During his tenure, he served as the President of the Tulsa Orthopedics Society, as well as the Treasurer for many years. He then served as the President at the State Orthopedics Society and represented the State of Oklahoma to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) on the governing Board of Counselors for 6 years. He also served as one of the founding members of the Tulsa Bone and Joint group where he worked for the last 15 years of his practice. He loved practicing orthopedics and loved helping his patients have a better outcome.
He retired from practice in January 2015. In his retirement, he found great joy in volunteering with several organizations and eating breakfast with his ROMEO group (Retired Old Men Eating Out). As a member of First Presbyterian Church, he served on the board of trustees and on numerous projects. Once he retired, he attended Monday school at First Presbyterian, which was his all-time favorite, and lead him to a deeper study of the bible. He loved picking up food from the Food Bank and then restocking the shelves in the Helping Hand pantry of First Presbyterian Church. He served as the Church Librarian for many years and enjoyed preparing new books for the library. He was on the Board of Directors at Camp Loughridge. Every summer during Hope's Crossing Camp week, he would drive the golf cart around with handicapped children to get them to their activities. He donated golf balls to First Tee, a youth development organization building strength in kids for a lifetime.
In his free time, he enjoyed golf, fly fishing, visiting children and grandchildren and traveling. He made lifelong friends playing golf. His favorite golf courses were Pine Hurst and Bay Hill. He loved watching Oklahoma Sooners football, Oklahoma City Thunder basketball games and Masters week for golf. One of his favorite trips was going to the Masters golf tournament. He looked forward to traveling to Rhode Island for lobsters, playing golf in Florida, and visiting the many wonderful restaurants in Texas! He and Mary Anne enjoyed several Viking cruises, two trips to Israel, as well as yearly visits to Colorado to escape the Oklahoma heat. Once all their children had moved out of their home, he and Mary Anne downsized. They found a whole group of new friends and had fun sharing wine and meals. Tom loved hosting a Kentucky Derby Party and an annual Lobster party.
He is preceded in death by his parents Harry and Betty Marberry, and his sister Betsy Marberry-Morris. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Mary Anne Marberry, his twin daughters Beth Addy and her husband Mason of Dallas, TX, Katie Feroldi and her husband Brian of North Kingstown, RI, his son Scott Thomas Marberry and his wife Shelby of Nocatee, FL. His grandchildren Cooper, Grayson, and Annabelle Addy; Tyler, Lindsey, and Madelyn Feroldi; Sloane and Stella Marberry.
