Obituary

Tommy Ray McDonald (69) died April 7, 2017, at home after a short battle with cancer. He leaves behind Cindy (Pryor) McDonald, his wife for 48 years, his three children, Sarah McDonald (and husband Scott) Smith of Bixby, Molly McDonald of Boston, and Ben McDonald (and wife Susannah Aaron) of Atlanta, and sister-in-law Nancy Raider (and husband Phil) of Springfield, MO. No grandchildren were ever more loved than Amelia and Owen Smith.

Tom was the son of Loy and Sudie McDonald of Sand Springs. He is survived by sister Shirley Dawson (Rochester, NY) and brother William McDonald (North Carolina). Sisters Gaynell Lockhart and Maxine Lamb preceded him in death.

Tom was a 1966 graduate of Will Rogers High School and attended OU and Tulsa University. He was long time employee of the Tulsa World and also worked for Met Life and Enterprise/Thrifty.

Tom's friends and family will remember him for his love of books, music, the New York Times crossword puzzle, cooking, his yard, woodworking, and his golden retrievers. He will also be remembered for his opinions on many topics, particularly his never-ending criticism of Oklahoma politics and his excessive pride in his children and grandchildren.

Per Tom's wishes, the family is planning a farewell celebration at a future date. Those who wish to honor his memory are encouraged to make a donation in his name to National Public Radio (local station KWGS) or to the charity of their choice.
