Obituary

Virginia Ann (Goodlick) Olson, 81, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2026, at her home in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Born on July 9, 1944, in Bloomington, IL to Walter and Eloise (Imig) Goodlick, Virginia lived a vibrant life in which she loved others well, and was well-loved by them in return.

Virginia - known as "Ginny" or "Gin" by those close to her - grew up on a farm in central Illinois. She graduated from Downs High School, where she was a cheerleader and played the saxophone. She attended college at Illinois State University for two years; she would go on to instill the importance of education to her children and grandchildren, always encouraging them to make college a priority. As a young woman, Virginia worked in the County Courthouse, where she developed a lifelong passion for civic processes and government.

In December, 1971, Virginia attended a friend's Christmas party and met her husband, Wayne. They were married a year later and recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary. After the birth of their children, Wayne and Virginia moved from Bloomington, IL to Broken Arrow, OK where they made their permanent home.

As a young mother, Virginia dedicated herself to raising her two children as a stay-at-home mom. But when her daughters started middle school, so did she! As the Principal's secretary at Haskell Middle School in Broken Arrow, OK, Virginia became an integral part of the school function and culture. She served there for nearly two decades before retiring with a deep sense of accomplishment - and a great sense of relief at no longer needing to wake up to an early morning alarm clock!

Virginia grew up attending Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomington, IL where she later married Wayne. Together they raised the family at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Broken Arrow, OK. More recently, she was an active member of Fellowship Lutheran Church in Tulsa.

Virginia's life revolved around her family. She loved nothing more than gathering together with her kids and grandkids, often sharing her hospitality with extended family and friends. She was an active participant in her daughters' activities, serving as a Brownie and Girl Scout Troop leader, PTA member, and Band Parent Treasurer for the Broken Arrow Pride band program. Virginia also served her community. She coordinated neighborhood events in Oak Ridge Estates, participated in a local food co-op, supported the women's ERA movement, and contributed to the Altar Guild at Fellowship Lutheran Church in Tulsa.

Virginia loved to travel and embraced every opportunity for adventure. Whether exploring England and Norway or enjoying the beauty of Washington D.C., Hawaii, Alaska, or the Colorado mountains, she made countless memories with Wayne by her side. Their favorite trip together was with long-time friends Gary and Emma Hayward on a cruise around the Baltic Sea, traveling through Europe and Russia. Another highlight was taking the grandkids on a Disney cruise for their 40th wedding anniversary. Closer to home, Virginia treasured time spent at their lake house on Grand Lake in Oklahoma.

Virginia could often be found gathering with the ladies at book club or bunko, or laughing with her long-standing knitting group at their regular dinner gatherings. She was a dedicated game player, usually wiping the table with her opponents in favorite games like Pitch, Euchre, Parcheesi, Take-Two, Golf, and Scrabble...though she met her match with the grandkids playing Monopoly Deal. She enjoyed cooking special things for others (especially her sons-in-laws favorite green cinnamon apples!) - and eating donuts and cinnamon rolls with whomever would participate.

Over the years, Virginia has cherished long-term, special friendships from high school (Jo and Joyce), her dating years (Gary and Emma), her work at Haskell (Carolyn and crew), and her daughters' extended families (the Cottrells and the Davidsons).

Virginia loved and appreciated Wayne and her daughters so much. But her grandchildren - Evan, Sean, Ashlyn and Erin - were the light of her life. She adored them, cherishing every moment of their childhoods and delighting in their accomplishments as they grew into young adults. She created lasting memories with them through her playful songs and stories; in her epic Christmas celebrations; with her involvement in their activities; by playing games and taking trips; through crafting, baking, and cooking; but, most of all in the way she loved them unconditionally.

Virginia is survived by her loving husband Wayne and their favorite pup, Sparky; daughters Suzanne Davidson (Danny) and Stefanie Cottrell (Brent); grandchildren Evan Davidson (20), Sean Davidson (18), Ashlyn Cottrell (18), and Erin Davidson (15); and brothers Bill Goodlick (Ann) and Bob Goodlick (Carol). She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Eloise Goodlick.

Virginia will be remembered as kind-hearted, vivacious, and deeply devoted to her family and friends. She lived a full and abundant life, and leaves behind her a legacy of love.
