Walter Chance "Wally" Knapp, 89, Tulsa, OK. Born in Mt. Ayr, IA, 24 December 1931 and died in Tulsa, OK, 28 August 2021. Longtime resident of Tulsa, member of East Side Christian Church, and member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. A 1949 graduate and All-State baseball player at Will Rogers High School. He was a 1954 graduate of The University of Tulsa, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education, a commission in the USAF, and two letters in baseball. Served on active duty with the USAF 1954-1956. Began his teaching and coaching career at Daniel Webster High School, where he led the Warrior varsity baseball team to state championships in 1958 and 1959. Oklahoma High School Baseball Coach of the year in 1959. Transferred to Nathan Hale High School in 1959, where he taught U.S. History, served as Athletic Director, and coached the Ranger varsity baseball, basketball, and golf teams. Received a Master's Degree in Teaching Arts from TU in 1962. Retired in 1986 and inducted into the Tulsa Public Schools Athletic Hall of Fame in 2020.
Preceded in death by his father, Harry Gordon Knapp, and mother, Mazill Imogene Knapp. Survived by his wife of 61 years, Phyllis Knapp of Tulsa; son Colonel Joseph Knapp, USMC, Ret. and wife Kimberly, of Owasso; son Lieutenant Commander James Knapp, USCG, Ret. and wife Chikako, of Jenks; and daughter Gretchen Young and husband Ansel of Grapevine, TX. Also survived by grandchildren Justin Knapp of Jenks, and William and Michael Young of Grapevine, TX.
