It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father and grandfather, Walter Austin Smith, Jr., at the age of 88, on December 2, 2024. He peacefully left this world in his home, after a life filled with love, laughter, and a deep sense of purpose.
Born on December 26, 1935, in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Walter, lived a life rich in both experience and wisdom. As a young man, he worked for the city of Tulsa as a waste collector. After many years with the city, he moved on to work at HS Boyd company. He retired from HS Boyd company and moved to Lake Hudson in Salina. He was always known for his unwavering work ethic, integrity, and quiet strength.
Above all, Walter was a devoted family man. He married the love of his life, Mary, in 1956, and together they raised 2 children, creating a loving home that was always a place of warmth and support. He was a proud father to Pamela and Michael, a doting grandfather to Kimberly, Dennis Jr., Sarah, and Angelia, and a doting great-grandfather to 12 (Kamryn, Mary-Ella, Addison, Kirbi-Jo, Tristan, Victoria, Hudson, Anna, Hayden, Jordan, Jaxson, and Jeremiah). His greatest joy came from spending time with his family-whether gathered around the dinner table, sharing stories, or simply enjoying one another's company. His legacy as a father and grandfather is one of kindness, patience, and boundless love.
Walter's love for fishing, card games, building, and all-around knowledge of how to fix everything was matched only by his love for his family. He leaves behind a legacy of joy, laughter, and the values of hard work, loyalty, and devotion.
He is survived by his children Pamela and her husband Dennis of Rose; Michael Smith of Salina, his grandchildren Kimberly DeGase of Tahlequah, Dennis DeGase Jr of Claremore, Sarah and her husband Nicholas Sloan of Okmulgee, and Angelia and her husband Bobby McMichael of Fort Carson, and numerous other family members and friends who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Smith, who passed away in 2015, his mother and father, and multiple siblings and friends.
