Wesley E. Thompson passed away on February 13, 2021. He was born to Carl and Muriel Thompson, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on March 11, 1939.
An active youngster, he participated and excelled in everything, from spelling bees and baseball, to the Tulsa Boys Choir. All the while managing to stay on the honor roll. He survived his busy childhood, in spite of having two older sisters, Iwan and Carolyn. After graduating Central High School in 1958,
he joined the Oklahoma Air National Guard, and served for six years, including a year of active duty during the Berlin Crisis.
He graduated from the University of Tulsa, and the BAI School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin, with honors. He began his long career here in Tulsa, at the Fourth National Bank. He moved to F&M Bank in 1975,
and rose to Senior Vice President, before his retirement in 1994.
At the age of four, his Mother carried a bowling ball to the foul line, and he pushed it down the lane. The pin boy had to crawl out from under the machine and retrieve the ball that never made it to the pins. And so began his life-long love of Bowling. He bowled his first league at 15, and went on to bowl in 17 national tournaments. He eventually had to have reconstructive surgery on his right wrist. So he just bowled left-handed for 14 years. When he switched back to right-handed bowling, he scored a 299 in the first week. He never bowled left-handed again.
He served elected office in the Tulsa Bowling Association, the Oklahoma State Bowling Association, the American Bowling Congress, and the Tulsa Area USBC. He was inducted into both the Tulsa and Oklahoma State Bowling Associations Halls of Fame.
Wes never met a stranger. He could talk to anyone, but would also listen. He smiled and laughed easily. In spite of his accomplishments, he remained just a big kid that loved people, and a good game.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Thompson, and Muriel McMillian, and his sisters Iwan Welborn, and Carolyn Williams. He is survived by his best friend, Brian Berger, nieces Dianna Weldon, and Linda Williams, great-niece Whitney Wakefield, and great-nephew Bryce Wakefield.
Viewing will be at Moore Funeral Home, Sunday, February 28th, and Monday, March 1st, from 11:00 to 5:00. Services also at Moore, Tuesday at 1:00 followed by interment at Rose Hill Memorial Park.
