Dr. William (Bill) Robert Yates, age 71, passed away on January 19th, 2023 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was born November 30th, 1951 in Geneva, Nebraska to T. Robert Yates and Florence Schrock.
Bill graduated from Geneva High School. He then attended Dana College in Blair, Nebraska earning his Bachelors in Chemistry before moving on to the University of Nebraska College of Medicine where he graduated as a Medical Doctor. He completed residencies through the University of Nebraska program (Family Medicine) and at the University of Iowa (Psychiatry) where he also earned his Masters in Preventative Medicine.
He served on the faculty at the University of Iowa for Psychiatry and Family Medicine before becoming Professor and Chair of Psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Tulsa. After retiring, he continued to dedicate his time as a volunteer research psychiatrist at OU and the Laureate Institute for Brain Research where he also served on the board of directors. He authored over 100 scientific manuscripts that were published in peer-reviewed journals.
He was married to his high school sweetheart Sonja Yates for 48 years.
Bill was a devoted Christian and a member of Asbury Church. One of his fondest memories was traveling to Israel to deepen his connection to his faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Shirley Nelson.
He is survived by his wife Sonja, his son Ted, his son Timothy and wife Ashley (Meador), and his daughter Sarah Hutcherson with husband Russell. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Claire, Mason, Ryan, and imminently arriving baby girl (Yates) and Sadie and John (Hutcherson).
Bill enjoyed spending time doing bird photography, watching baseball, raising monarch butterflies, and reading books.
A remembrance service will be held at Asbury Church, 6767 S Mingo Rd, Tulsa, OK on Thursday, January 26th at 1pm.
