Obituary

William R. Mast, MD, age 74, born at home July 2, 1940 in Hartley, Delaware, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 17, 2015 in Inola, Oklahoma. William was the son of Clarence and Sylvia Mast of Hartley, Delaware and was the seventh of nine children. He is preceded in death by his mother and father and his siblings Lawrence, Lydia, Daniel, and Lillie. He is survived by his wife Carolyn, his children Valerie Mast of New York, NY; William R. Mast, Jr. of Salisbury, MD; Maria Moore of Broken Arrow, OK; and Lisa Hart, DO of Jenks, OK; and his eight grandchildren: Jacob, Emily, Katharine, John, Elias, Lydia, Gideon, and Gavin. He is survived by his siblings Irene Kauffman of Greenwood, DE; John Mast of Lederach, PA; Clarence Mast, MD of Tunkannock, PA, and Robert Mast of Greenwood, DE.

William graduated as valedictorian from Dover High School in 1958. He was then the first person in his family to graduate from college, completing a Bachelor's of Science in Chemistry at Ursinus College of Collegeville, PA in 1962. He was again class valedictorian, graduating Magna cum Laude. He met and married his wife Carolyn of almost 51 years during his second year of medical school. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia in 1966 and then completed his training for surgery in Otorhinolaryngology at the University of Pennsylvania in 1974.

In the interim between his internship and surgery training, he served as the Chief Public Health Officer in Constantine, Algeria for two years. William practiced as an Ear Nose and Throat and Head and Neck surgeon (ENT) in Dover, Delaware from 1975-1984. He concurrently served as an assistant and then clinical instructor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine from 1971-1985.

William moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma and was active as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery as an otolaryngologist at Oral Roberts University School of Medicine from 1985-1990. He practiced at the City of Faith Medical and Research Center during this time. He then re-entered private practice in 1990 in Tulsa until his retirement in 2001. He was a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Tulsa while in private practice as well. His other hospital affiliations during this time included Hillcrest Medical Center, St. John Medical Center, Broken Arrow Medical Center, Cancer Treatment Center of Tulsa, St. Francis Hospital, Doctor's Hospital, Children's Medical Center, Pawnee Municipal Hospital, Bartlett Memorial Medical Center, Brookhaven Hospital, Cushing Regional Hospital, and Grove Hospital.
His medical society affiliations included the American Medical Association; Oklahoma State Medical Association; Tulsa County Medical Society; American College of Surgeons, Fellow; American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Fellow; Oklahoma Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery; Christian Medical Society; Christian Medical Foundation; Mennonite Medical Association.

William was very active in Church leadership beginning in the 1970's when he served as an interim pastor for Lakewood Mennonite Church for 6 months in 1975-76 and an elder for Christian Life Center, Dover, Delaware from 1975-78. William became known as "Dr. Bill" as he began going on regular short-term overseas medical missions in 1986 through 2012. He attended Rhema Bible Training Center from 1989-1991. After graduating, he was an active instructor at Rhema from 1991-1997, teaching about medical missions and then volunteering in the healing school through his medical retirement. He entered full-time ministry in 2002, and received ordination from Grace Fellowship, and then Rhema Ministerial Association International in 2004. Since 1982, God sent "Dr. Bill" on over 60 mission trips to and through 46 countries including India, Philippines, Thailand, Mongolia, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Nepal, China, Russia, Bulgaria, Mexico and Peru. He was active during this time in several missions programs and ministries in the Tulsa area including: Grace Fellowship Church, Rhema Healing School, Blessings International (Board Member), Geof Jackson Ministries, Mauldin Ministries, Redeeming Love Prison Ministry, Open Doors, Nation to Nation, Behram Ministries, Turning Point Ministries, and several others.

He was fluent in 4 languages (English, French, Spanish and German) and was conversational in the languages spoken in the countries he visited during his international travels, i.e. Hebrew, Russian, Mandarin Chinese, Hindi, Arabic, Tagalog, and Swahili. William was well-known for his generosity of spirit and his ability to use his talents to serve his community and his church. He was always available to pray with patients, friends, and family for any need they encountered, and then actively help them. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, friend, physician and surgeon, and minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
