Wilma Odessia Wheelock Beckett died quietly Tuesday morning, one week shy of her 100th birthday and in her home of 73 years. She was born in Walnut, Iowa, but raised primarily on a farm in Montgomery County, Kansas. Her parents were Nettie (Parret) and Charles Oscar Wheelock, and she was the next to youngest among her siblings Anna, Ona, Emery, Cecil, Alberta, Leona, and Jim.
In 1941, she married Claude Beckett, the love of her life, and they settled in Tulsa, where they both worked for Progressive Brass for many years. During their marriage, they enjoyed traveling, bowling, playing pinochle, doing puzzles, visiting friends and family in Kansas and Oklahoma and, more often than not, just spending time together. If asked the secret to her longevity, she had a simple answer: "I like to laugh."
Anyone who knocked on Wilma's back door was greeted by her infectious smile, quick step, and easy laugh. She loved to entertain neighbors and visitors in her comfortable kitchen booth or, in the summer, on her screened-in porch, where she'd offer fresh coffee, the best iced tea in Tulsa, and unforgettable homespun stories. Whether recounting her adventures as child growing up on a farm or her persistent attempts to teach her elderly neighbor Annette how to drive a car (when Wilma herself was her seventies),Wilma was always glad to share a story or hear a new one. She genuinely wanted to know what you were up to.
Preceding Wilma in death were her husband Claude Beckett, in 1963, and daughter Helen Irene Beckett Orme, in 2003. She is survived by grandchildren Carleton Orme, Scott Orme, and Todd Orme (Lisa Hartman) and six great-grandchildren.
A service will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery Chapel, on Friday, March 7, 2014 at 2:30 pm at 4161 East Admiral Place. The family would like to give warm, heartfelt thanks to Don Barnum and Cathy Fox for all of their ongoing support, kindness, and love. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Wilma's name to Tulsa Hospice or First Baptist Church in Downtown Tulsa.
