Zerita Martin was born to Miles and Nona Price in London, Arkansas on August 22, 1928, and died at home in Tulsa on Wednesday evening surrounded by her children, Pam Lundy, Dennis Martin, and close friends. As a young woman, she was an ardent supporter of the men in her hometown serving in World War II by writing letters to them every day. She and her husband, Riley, came to Tulsa in the 50s to work at McDonnell Douglas. She went on to work as a secretary at North American Rockwell, Midwest Instruments, and retired from B S & B. Her time of retirement was spent in service to her church, its members, and her dear friends. Her zest for life and love of cooking accompanied her gift of hospitality shared with so many who enjoyed meals and lodging in her home. Her heartfelt devotion for folks needing help through a difficult time or celebrating life events was borne out through the use of her many culinary skills.
She cherished the relationship with her sisters, Johna Dell Knight of Russellville, Arkansas and Barbara Hutchinson of Owasso, OK and their husbands Jug and Ronnie. Being a grandparent to Dennis and Mary's children, Isaac and Gabriel, was the delight of her life. She was a loving mother who paved the way for a college education and set an example for living a life driven by Christian principles. She touched the lives of family and friends by encouraging them in their faith and being a help in personal and meaningful ways. Zerita and Riley sponsored youth groups at Sheridan Avenue United Methodist Church and founded a Sunday School class of young married couples at Will Rogers United Methodist Church. That work and her devotion to her family are her legacy. She was preceded in death by her husband and her grandson Gabriel.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 4th, at Will Rogers United Methodist Church.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Will Rogers UMC Food Pantry.
